Melvin Douglas "Mel" Stevens

It is with great sadness that the family announces the unexpected  passing of Mel Stevens of Saint John, who passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday January 8th, 2012, with his family at his side. Born in Saint John in July of 1939 he was the youngest son of Roy and Mary (Cotton) Stevens. Mel worked for the City of Saint John for over 26 years retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Outside Workers Local #18, Carleton #002 RCL, Associate Member. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend; who lived and breathed for his family. Mel enjoyed music, Bingo, baseball and hockey. He is survived by his loving wife Jean (Dutcher) Stevens of Saint John; daughters Peggy (Mark) of Fairfield and Melissa (Ritchie) of Saint John; grandchildren Chelisa (Billy), Jeffrey and Colin; one precious great-grandson Carter; one brother Leonard (Marie) of Saint John; two sisters Patricia Carpenter (Clarence) of Saint John and Florence Jukes of Brampton; nieces, nephews and many friends. Besides his parents Mel was predeceased by brothers Kenneth, Clifford, Roy, Gerald and Stuart.

Resting at the Fundy Funeral Home 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitations on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Legion Tribute  will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. A  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 201 Bayside Drive  on Thursday,  January 12, 2012 at 12:05 p.m. Interment to follow at Ocean View Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations in Mel’s memory can be made to the Cardiac Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
