My wife Donna and I wish to offer condolences to the Murphy family. We got to see Steve's books that he has written and Behind the Camera shows Doug and his wife. I had an opportunity to meet Steve when we both got off the Metro Transit bus in front of the CTV in Halifax. My mother's cousin Donna Coade, is married to Peter when he worked at CTV.

Steve, Ellen, Peter and Doug's extended family, we have lost one of our great treasures in the city and diocese. Doug was always a gentleman with well measured comment and insight from his vast talent and experience. More than that he had a deep faith and maturity which made his company a real pleasure. My gratitude to him is hard to express for the times he understood situations much better than I could giving solace to those who needed it, adding joy to peoples lives and expressing "those who sing, pray twice". He always took such care with every sale and never made me feel like an idiot when I didn't understand the proper aperture settings or f stops. He was a lovely gentleman, always with a twinkle in his eye and his smile was unforgettable.

Ellen, Steve and Peter - my sincere condolences to you and your families. I remember going to your Dad's store to buy my 45's when I got my allowance on Saturdays. He was always so nice to the teenagers in the store! I loved his music at St. Joachim's!!! He was very fortunate to have 3 children who obviously loved him very much, especially in his later years. I often saw Ellen with Doug @ McAllister Food Court on Tuesday nights when I was there with friends. He still had his beautiful smile!

I had a wonderful visit with your father this summer and should have had more. My lost because I had wanted to visit with him more. To me he was just one of those very special individuals who always showed interest in you every time you crossed paths. He always left me with a silent feeling of satisfaction in life, never complaining but genuinely interested in what you were doing these days.
What pleasure it must be for you and your family to have had such a wonderful father. I know he was proud of you Steve because I used to ask him how you were doing and a sparkle would come in his eyes and a skip to his voice. I am sure he held the same for all of you.
There is not much I could say about your father for he said it all himself through his foot steps into our lives. Reason why a community would have such great memories of Doug.
I know there is sadness but the memories of His life will be overcome with joy just to have been blessed with his presence in your life.

Oh! How Doug loved those O'Henry chocolate bars!!
I knew the Murphy family pretty well all my life. We were true Saint John South enders.
Fortunately, we reconnected several years ago. It was ironic Doug was to spend time at the Turnbull Home as it was one block from where he grew up.
Doug and Ellen attended several social events we held in Saint John. We were all of the same age. Everyone knew Doug from his music days. My uncle Ron Cooke was a good friend and band member with Doug for many years.
All our sincerest condolences to all the Murphy family.
Doug was a great guy.

I remember when I was a teenager and went to buy a guitar up at Woolco, he took the time to explain what kind I wanted and what kind of picks and books I would need. Dear Steve and family I am so sorry to read about your Dad's passing, I worked at Woolco back in the late 70's and your dada was one of the most kindest, happiest and very respectful man that I have ever know. no matter when you needed help or a answer to a question Doug was the to help. We have gone to some staff parties together and even had our own little dues with Phyllis Leeman and Pat I also would wee your Dad at the mall with your sister and no matter what he always had time to chat and of course his big smile . Doug you will always live on in the memories of some many heart that you have touch and I am so proud and privilege to be one of the, RIP DOUG , HUGS and prayers are being sent to his family that he so much treasured

So many thoughts of Doug going through my mind now - from the artillery band, to talking about music history here in the City. However, it is his smile, his gentlemanly manners that I got to see and appreciate over the time he was at Turnbull Home will remain with me for the rest of my days. Every month I return to Turnbull, I will have your dad with me.

We are at a family gathering at Moms talking about some of our fond memories of Doug.
I remember how excited I was every time he would bring home bags of broken microphones, tape recorders etc. from Woolco for me and Steve to fix up and play with. I also mentioned the time Doug asked me if I was smoking when he noticed my fingers were yellow from eating cheesies. so many awesome memories like sitting with the band while they played for the variety show at the exhibition. We felt so important.
Mom remembers hearing beautiful trumpet sounds coming from the Murphy house and remembers him saying "if I don't figure out how to play this thing by the time I'm 40, I'm quitting". Bonny mentioned how she remembers my excitement whenever Doug brought us to "the hill" to fly his radio controlled planes and how we would go for a drive to the airport almost every weekend and he would pretend he was flying a real plane, he would pull back on the steering wheel and we would be flying, and then all go for ice cream...
Donna remembers when Patty and Janet McKinley got new go go boots and called Doug to ask if he needed any Go Go dancers for his band.
I also remember spending so much time in the Murphy living room playing records from Doug's store, singing, playing ukulele. Doug never said much, he just watched with a huge smile on his face.
Everyone remembers how growing up in Champlain Heights was so special: the whole neighbourhood was like one huge family and the Murphy's were a big part of it. We all joined back yards and filled them with fun and wonderful memories.
