Reading Rolf Duschenes' obituary in last Saturday's "Globe" introduced me to him. The "Globe" had similarly, in a "Lives Lived" reportage, told me Ermon Fay's life of remarkable accomplishments. My connection to both departed Duschenes springs from Wendy and Jennifer, who took me into their Sandy Hill, Ottawa, flat for a season three-eighths of a century ago.

My heartfelt sympathies go to all Rolf and Ermon Fay's children, but especially Wendy and Jennifer, at their great loss.

To the extended family of Rolf Duschenes; I was saddened yesterday to read in the newspaper that Rolf is no longer with us; but I was gratified  to note that he filled his 96 years on earth with such a mother lode of valued accomplishments. He certainly earned to the full the awards that came his way. He always gave me the impression that his years in Canada were very happy, for the most part, and happiness of course was its own reward.

During our concurrent time at McGill he became my closest friend, and  I treasure deeply the serious side of all that that friendship meant to me. On the less serious side he taught me never to take photos of anyone without organizing their backgrounds. My wife Barbara was at McGill concurrently, and she became a good friend of Rolf also, such that she and her late sister Eleanor spent a night with him trying to sleep on a pile of BeautyRest mattresses in the Norway Bay railroad station. Please accept our condolences for the loss of your marvellous parent, and please know that we think of him with reminiscent gratitude and pleasure.

I remember him fondly - he was an impressive and witty man.  We young visitors always faced a friendly grilling about what we were up to, and benefited from insightful and often droll comments.  It was special to be included in some of the bustling activies of the Duschenes household.
My condolences to all of you on his passing.

Jennifer,
Please accept our family's sincere sympathy on your father's passing.

Your home in Westfield growing up was full of culture and fun. Our summers in 'the grove' were special with your four sisters, and three other households besides ours packed with children the same age who arrived for the summer. Yours' served buckwheat pancakes I will never forget.

You must be so proud of your father.  Such a wonderful obituary, with so many achievements, both as a volunteer and professional. A recipient of 'The Order of Canada'.
It was a privilege to have known him.

On behalf of my family our sincere condolences to all of you girls and your families.

I was saddened to hear of the death of Rolf Duschenes. I knew him through my association with the NB Youth Orchestra. I played flute next to Jennifer Duschenes. I also knew his brother Mario Duschenes. Wonderful people!

Rolf’s outstanding contributions are greatly appreciated.

We were privileged to know Rolf and Ermon Fay in the 1970's and are very sad to hear of Rolf's passing. They both did so much for the arts and were very generous with their energies. Best wishes to all of their family.

I have many memories of Rolf through the course of my life as he was a close friend and neighbour of my parents. At one time I asked to interview him about his health issues. He was so helpful and insightful. Condolences to family and friends at this time.

It is with great sadness that I send this note of condolence to the Duschenes family over the passing on of a great father, grand-father, community leader and inspirational leader in the arts and music. Rolf (and Ermon Fay) has always been a tremendous part of my family's circle of friends in the Saint John area; I will remember our times together with fondness. To the family, take strength from the many hearts that have been touched by his passing.

My sincere condolences to all of Rolf's family.

I met and worked with Rolf when I first moved to Saint John in 1990 at DFS, whereby I had the privilege of joining Rolf for a few project meetings in Saint Andrews as well as locally.  As part of the DFS team, we also had a number of great work/social events at both Rolf and Ermon Fay's home in Westfield and also in Longs Creek.  They both were very supportive of me personally and my career and attended my mothers funeral in Oromocto many years ago, which was greatly appreciated.

The last time I saw Rolf was at Ermon Fay's memorial service, but I've thought of him often, even as recently as this past week.  He was very methodical and disciplined and a great mentor.

My thoughts are with you all over the next couple of days, which regretfully, take me to Halifax, due to prearranged business meetings, so I won't have a chance to see you all and offer my condolences in person.

Best to you all as you remember your great father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend over the days, weeks and months ahead.

Sincerely,

Karen Slade

Rolf was one amazing man!
I am very fortunate and grateful to have known him. I always loved to listen to his stories about his past, no matter how many times I heard them, and loved talking with him about art, architecture and the world. He filled a void for me, a closeness that I never did have with my own grandparents. He will be very missed. I will continue to remember all the wonderful times we shared together. Love you Rolf.

Hugs and my deepest sympathies go out to all family members.
Wish I could be there to celebrate his life with you all.

I wish to extend deepest condolences to Rolf's family from me, the members of the board of directors of Symphony New Brunswick, our staff and musicians.  Rolf was a pioneer of symphonic music in New Brunswick playing vital roles, both as musician and organizer, in the Saint John and New Brunswick Symphony Orchestras (1950-1968), the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra and in the rebirth of Symphony New Brunswick in 1983-1984.  He was a personal inspiration to me and his example has helped keep me involved in SNB's development since the early years.  He will be greatly missed.
