My sincerest sympathy to the family. Although I had lost contact over the years, Peter will always be remembered for the freindship we enjoyed at SJRHS and UNBSJ.  As an outsider moving to Saint John in my last year at high school, Peter extended a true Maritime welcome and we soon found out we had things in common. His parents' home was a gathering spot for many of us and judging by the comments this sense of openness continued throughout his life. I particularly remember the cottage at Pointe de Chene and the endless card games there and elsewhere.
Not many people accomplish so much in so little time. I admired his organizing skills and his gift of being able to put people at ease, traits that ensured his success in politics and teaching.  If I were a student he is the kind of teacher I would want; someone who is passionate, a good communicator with patience and understanding.
My thoughts and prayers for you Debbie,

Gary Buzzell

Debbie I was shocked and saddened to hear of Peters sudden death. One of the things I looked forward to on my return visits to Shediac was having a game of golf with Peter and sharing a cold one with him (usually his) on the cottage back deck. Also enjoyed his insights on what was good and bad about the political scene in New Brunswick. I share your loss and send my sympathy.

To Debbie and Family.   I am saddened to hear of the passing of Peter.  It has been a very long time since I have seen Peter as I no longer live in New Brunswick but Kelowna, B.C.   I well remember good old Simonds High and his marriage to one of my best friends - Debbie.   I remember him as a humorous guy who laughed and loved life.   My thoughts and prayers are with you.  Time will heal your hearts and precious memories will stay with you forever.

Debbie and family,  I just read the sad news - I was away from Saturday until Monday so missed the funeral.  I would have been there.

It's wonderful to read all the tributes from all kinds of people.  You have to know that all of us who knew or worked with Peter are grateful to you for sharing him with us.  He was a very special person.

I have written a little letter of tribute to him which should appear in the Telegraph-Journal within a week or so.  He was a big part of my life - indeed, he set me on the course I have followed ever since.  His spirit lives on.

All the best.

I was a student of Mr. Trites in 1982-83.  He was a wonderful man, a wonderful teacher and I alway looked forward to his class.  I found him to be a man who spoke TO me and not AT me.  I felt like he understood us as students - understood me and what I needed in order to learn.
That was a long time ago but I remember it all so clearly.  He made a great impression on me in how I interact with people.
Thank you, Mr. Trites.

My sincere condolences to your family.

Debbie and family, I was stunned while watching TV tonight and hearing the news about cousin Peter. So sorry to hear such sad news. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. It is refreshing to read such wonderful tributes re his teaching skills and abilities. It is obvious he touched many many young people and helped enhance their lives. I think of the Trites family often while vacationning in Florida, near Dunedin. Especially at the Blue Jays field where Peter's father was a strong supporter. I do remember Peter at the family cottage in years gone by as well. Take care and God bless. Wayne, Louise and family

Maris.  I played baseball and hockey with Peter at the old field behind the fire station. Peter was a few years ahead of me at Simonds High at the old school on Bayside Drive.  He was very active on committees, in discussion clubs, and at team group meetings at school. Dear Debbie and Family:

I was very sad to to learn of Peter''s sudden passing. Our paths had crossed many times over the years while he was involved in municipal government. I especially enjoyed the years we spent together on the Maritime Municipal Training and Development Board.

Those are good memories of a small group of friends, sharing many meals together,  engaged in fascinating conversation and debate,  punctuated by hearty laughter and a genuine respect for each other. They were the best of times.

My wife Marion joins me in expressing our sympathy to all of you. Peter made a valued contribution to the world in which we live and touched many lives along the way.

His good works will live on in the lives of those he touched the most, his loves ones, whom we remember  in our prayers this day.

May God be with you all

Debbie,

It was with much surprise and sadness that we learned of  Peter's death.

Over the years we have gained many close friends in politics and life in general. We always considered you and Peter to be among thoses who we could always consider friends. Peter was one of those collegues who believed that the ordinary person was as important as the ones who were always chasing government for the bigger things.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of sorrow.

We will not be able to attend the funeral, as I am out of the province for the week.

Message from Gary Peters
May 15, 2010 8:44 PM

To the Trites Family,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss of Peter.

My connection to him goes back several decades.  As a former 'East end' boy, I remember Peter being a fellow member of the alter boys at Stella Maris church during Father Kinsella's tenure.  He would often sit in the pew beside his long time friend, Paul Riley.  I am sure you know Paul and will agree the height contrast might appear comical were it not for the fact that Peter's enormous personality could easily fill a room.

Peter was a huge man in my life and the lives of many of the students he taught throughout his career at Simonds High school.  I graduated from Simonds in 1973.  In retrospect many of us were very fortunate to have been taught by prominent men from the 'three solitutes' of political life in New Brunswick; B.J. Harrison (PC), George Little (NDP) and Peter (Lib).  I recall being captivated and challenged as a young man by Peter's Political Science class.  In the interest of partisan balance, Mr. Harrison and Peter each taught half of the curriculum for the course.  I have never forgotten that experience.

In recent years I would occasionally see Peter in passing and he would always make a point of smiling and saying hello.  I know I am one person among many that felt a fond connection to him.

I am sure my departed mother (Patricia) will be at heaven's gate to extend a 'welcome home' to Peter.  She thought the world of him and his mother and father from her days at Stella Maris church.  I can think of no higher praise than her affection.

I hope the Trites family takes comfort in it's time of grief from the knowledge that, though Peter left us too soon, he lived a wonderfully full life that touched many souls - mine among them.

Sincerely yours,
Gary Peters

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Trites. Peter was my law teacher in Simonds High School in 1994-1995. I have always said, through the years after graduation, that my most memorable teacher was Mr. Trites. His knowledge of law and politics was easily conveyed due to his charming  character and love of teaching.  It was unremarkable how he could grab and hold everyone's attention from the very first minute of class, right to the time the bell rang. (and with the crowd we had, he deserves a medal!)  To be totally honest, I can still regurgitate, verbatim, many of his lectures on Canadian Law.  Peter left a lasting impression on me and I truly value and respect him, as a teacher, as well as an honored member of our little city.
To the family of Mr. Trites;  I hope you all find comfort in the love of your family and friends.  May God bless you all during this difficult time. You have my most sincere condolences, and I wish you all the best.  Mr. Trites will  always be remembered for all he has done, for so many and for so long.

Our deepest condolences to Debbie and family.  Peter was always so full of life and so engaged with the world. It does not seem possible that he is no longer with us. He had a great sense of humour and I remember always having a laugh with him when we would meet at extended family events.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
