Hugh McLean Magee, 83, of Saint John, NB, died peacefully on January 18, 2015 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, to Hugh and Susannah (Stoddart) Magee, he trained as a draughtsman in John Brown’s Shipyard in Glasgow. He and his family emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1962 where Hugh worked at Saint John Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Ltd. as Steel Superintendent, General Superintendent and Manager of Industrial Relations until his retirement.
Hugh was interested in world affairs, computers, painting and drawing. He loved corny jokes and would delight in telling them over and over. He could fix just about anything around the house or car. He loved his family most of all and was the consummate family man – never missing a birthday, holiday or school event in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ballantyne, known as ‘Molly’; his children, Anne of Fredericton, Marlyn Isaac (Francis) and Hugh Jr. (Evelyn) of Quispamsis; four grandchildren, David Isaac (Melanie) of Vancouver, Susan Isaac (Steve Walsh) of Saint John, Sarah Magee (Chris Stewart) of Petawawa and Alana Magee (Brendon O’Connor) of Calgary. In addition to his parents, Hugh was predeceased by his brother William and sister Mary Gilchrist.
Arrangements entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, January 22, 2015 from Fundy Funeral Home Chapel at 10 am followed by a reception at the funeral home. Interment will be held in Ocean View Memorial Gardens after the reception.
