Welcome to the memorial page for

Gwendolyn J. (Wendy) Martindale

August 1, 1952 ~ July 7, 2010 (age 57) 57 Years Old
Wendy (Gwendolyn J.) Martindale (1952-2010)

Wendy died peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a two year struggle with Breast Cancer. She leaves to mourn her partner of thirty years Harvey J. Smith and his son Matthew, her sisters Joyce Martindale and Diane Lansdell, and numerous friends and colleagues across Canada.
As an unapologetic Seventies feminist, Wendy chose career over a more traditional path and after her degree from the University of Waterloo began working with the Conservation Authorities in Ontario. She moved to Alberta in 1980 and worked in various positions with the Department of Recreation and Parks in Head office and in the Rimbey Regional Office. In 1987 she moved to Red Deer, Alberta to take over the fledgling post of Tourism Coordinator for the City of Red Deer. She once commented that the only other job in Red Deer that she would like was that of the Museum Director, and when it became vacant she happily filled the post for ten years.
When the opportunity to move to New Brunswick as the Director of Community Programs for the Museum of New Brunswick in 2004 – new challenges, new landscapes and most of all, new ingredients – she jumped. We packed the pets, some furniture and a lot of books and traveled across Canada to our new home. Despite the challenges of re-establishing herself in this new place, she made wonderful friendships with people who have supported us throughout our battle with Breast Cancer. In order to keep friends across Canada informed of her progress she started a blog at: http://wendyjourney.blogspot.com/
Our deepest thanks and gratitude to Dr. Burnell, Dr. Scarth and Dr. Wildish and all the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their timely and compassionate care.
Wendy has stipulated that there be no funeral after her cremation. A celebration of Wendy’s life will be held at the New Brunswick Museum Monday, July 12, 2010 from 5-8 pm. Announcements will be made on her blog. Anyone wishing to do so, may make donations in her name to the Canadian Cancer Society, and for you lefties out there, The Stephen Lewis Foundation. Failing these two, any donation in her name to any community based arts support group would also be welcome. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, Saint John, (506-646-2424). www.fundyfuneralhome.com
