Condolences to the Donnelly family. I worked with Fred when I was a features editor for the Telegraph-Journal. Fred was always pitching great ideas. You never knew what he'd write about, but it would always be interesting and was often so well-written, it just needed a headline. He always mentioned his family in any passing conversation. He will be missed. Love and prayers to family. Angela Kippers

Dear Sandra, James and family,
I was away and thought I had misread the announcement. How could Fred have bowed out of this world?
Fred was more than a Professor of British History... he knew French History pretty well too! He was also a Professor of Life and I so enjoyed talking with him in the hallway, the Faculty Club or at Tim Horton's. He was a gentleman and humanist.
I remember us talking with your father at the Imperial Theatre after he lost his wife/your mother. He was visibly shaken by this terribly unfortunate and unforeseen event and it was difficult to witness. But your father rebounded and it was a pleasure to see him with his projects of trips and columns to write on most diverse topics.
I believe Fred had become a Professor of Retirement Well-Lived; and I was taking notes...!
Please, accept our most sincere and deep condolences at this difficult time.

Dear Sandra, James & families,
It was with such shock and sorrow we heard of your Dad's passing. Our thoughts & prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time. Dave & I both enjoyed a conversation with your Dad at UNBSJ's 50th Reunion Celebration recently. It was great to see him and we had our own reunion of sorts. He was always so pleasant to talk to and always made you feel he was glad to see you. He was indeed a very special man. We are away at this time and very sorry we are not able to pay our respects in person. We pray your Faith, family, friends and all your wonderful memories will help sustain you during the sad times.
With sincere sympathy & God's blessings,

There is no words that can express how sorry we are to hear about the death of your dad. I know how difficult it must have been, especially with the passing of your mom a short time ago. How quickly time flies and more and more the reality of how precious our time here is. Lisa still remembers the trips to the museum with your dad when she was little. Dear Sandra, James, and family,
We were so very shocked and saddened to get the news of Fred's passing. He was a wonderful person and a tremendous raconteur. Mike has many fond memories of his stories heard while attending the famous Christmas parties that he and Marilyn hosted; they remain memorable events of his youth. Elaheh also got to know Fred in recent visits and we had the opportunity to have lunch with him on one of our layovers in Toronto, when Fred was on his way to Florida. He was witty and charming as always and told many interesting tales of his recent travels. We were both very saddened to get this news and we can only send our very deepest condolences. Fred will be very much missed.

During our years together in the History Departments at UNB, Fred in Saint John and I in Fredericton, I never came away from any conversation with Fred on any topic that wasn't informative, stimulating, and pleasurable. Fred had original ideas and opinions, and an affable, engaging way of bringing others into the circle of his thinking. He was one of those rare individuals that you always look forward to meeting and talking to, and from whose conversation you always came away feeling good. Condolences to his family, his UNBSJ colleagues, and his many friends.

When I first arrived at UNB, Fred was one of the first people to welcome me with open arms. Our mutual interest in 'working class history' ensured that our friendship would sustain itself ever since. Even to this day, his research into the 'Sheffield Riot against the 1832 Anatomy act' is a classic in its field; and I found myself re-visiting it just this summer. This scholarship, coupled with his obvious charm, affability and intellectual curiousity, made him a simply wonderful colleague. Our deepest sympathies are extended to Sandra, James and families.

Fred knew of my interest in history, and we had many interesting conversations when I had my stall in the City Market (he'd also visited the store several times). He even went to the trouble of printing one of his columns, "Why Novelists Make Such Great Spies", and bringing it to me (I still have it!). I found his talks on the history of sports, leisure and labour very interesting. I remember too, one time when he did me a huge favour. It was the night before the deadline for grad school applications and the professor I was expecting to get a letter of reference from ended up forgetting or something, and I very last minute asked Mr. Donnelly if he could help me out and miraculously he did.
