Welcome to the memorial page for

David Thorn

September 10, 2016

David Thorn son of the late Leslie and Isabella, died peacefully on Sept.10 with his family present.
Born and educated in London, England he experienced the effects of war and its aftermath as a young child. His stories were heard by many children in Saint John schools. David was a Chemist by profession first working in industry, then as a biochemistry research assistant.
His teaching career began in 1961 at Hammersmith Technical College and in 1966 he immigrated to Canada with Sonia, the love of his life. He taught Sciences at Rothesay Collegiate 1966-68.
For the next 27 years David enjoyed a distinguished career at NBCC teaching Analytical Chemistry. He instilled in his students a sense of professionalism and
commitment paralleling his own. His students and peers respected his knowledge and teaching ability. It was frequently said, "When David spoke you listened.”

He received the Polysar Award (1980) for teaching excellence and the Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contributions on the National Executive of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC)
He was also Director of Education and Accreditation of the Canadian Society of Chemical Technology.

A devoted son, husband, father and grandfather who loved unconditionally. A gentle man with strong values; tolerant, fair, compassionate, dependable and generous. His children and students sought and valued his wisdom and advice. Never a complainer he faced his illness and its effects with remarkable faith, courage and patience.

David was a voracious reader, avid horse racing and British soccer fan. Gardening, walking his dog, family holidays and travels with Sonia were his joys. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6595, active member of St. Ann’s Church, volunteered for many local organizations, coached soccer and was a member of the Saint John Astronomy Club.

Survived by Sonia, son Peter (Cindy) daughters Nicole and Julia (Darren). Grandchildren Lauren, Brendan, Ashlyn and many caring extended family and friends. David will be missed by all.
