Arthur W. Whelly

Whelly, Arthur W. - The death of Arthur W. Whelly, Q.C., occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 9, 1997,following a courageous battle with Cancer. Born in Saint John NB, a son of the late James and Elizabeth Whilly, he graduated from St. Jospeh's University and The University of New Brunswick. Upon graduation, he commenced a practice of law that lasted for more then 59 years, interrupted only by his service with the Royal Canadian Army during the Second World War when he attained the rank of Captain. He continued to practice law up to being hospitilized, as a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the law Socieyt of New Brunswick as well as an Honorary Life Membership in the Saint John Society. Hw was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of columbus, Council #937, as well as a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly. A avid golfer, he was a member of the Riverside Golf and Countr Club. Active in Politics, he was a canadiate for the Liberal Party of canada during the 1963 and 1965 federal elections. Survivng desides his wife, are three daughters, Maureen A (Mrs. Emerson Mills), M. Patricia (Mrs. Kevin M. Riley), M. Elizabeth (Mrs. Gary R. Curran), a son, James A. Whelly (Catherine A.), a step-son, James Berge (Lois), a step-daughter, Carolyn Berge (David Zuppke), nine grandchildren, six, step grandchildren, two brothers, Rev. Joseph E. Whelly, Charles F. Whelly, Q.C., two sosters, Sr. Zetta G. Whelly, Constance O. Murphy and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary C. (Hanlon), as well as by seven brother and sisters and two nephews.

Resting at the Fundy Funeral Home (646-2424) 23- Westmorland Road, from where a mass of Christain Burial will be held at the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, January 13, 1997, at the hour of 12:00 noon. Friends and family are welcome at the funeral home Saturday and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9p.m. Donations to the donors choice would be appreciated.
