Welcome to the memorial page for

Peter Gerald Trites

December 17, 1946 ~ May 13, 2010 (age 63) 63 Years Old
Surrounded by his loving family, Peter Gerald Trites, December 17th, 1946 passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness at the Moncton City Hospital on May 13th, 2010.  Peter was the son of the late Gerald & Elizabeth (Campbell) Trites and devoted husband for 37 years to Deborah (Smith).  Proud father of Andrew (Stacey) of Moncton and Andrea (Joe) Rector of Charlottetown, PEI.  He was a wonderful grandfather to his pride and joy, Keira Rector and step grandson Casey Mills.  Peter also was survived by his sister Judy (Carl) Steeves of Plumweseep, mother-in-law Ernestine Smith of Saint John and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Peter was a teacher at Simonds High School from 1968 – 1998 and co wrote the syllabus of Economics and Political Science for High School.  He coached high school basketball, softball and curling – his curling team won provincials in ’74 and went to Nationals in Ottawa.  Peter’s first love was politics and ran as an NDP in 1984 bi-election, winning which was an upset of a seat held by the Conservatives for 48 years.  Always a liberal at heart, Peter crossed over to become a liberal and won a seat in Frank McKenna’s landslide political victory in 1987.  He sat as a member of Cabinet as the Minister of Housing from 1987-1991.  Peter said he would always retire as a teacher, so with his family growing up he returned to teaching at Simonds High in 1991.  However, the political bug not yet gone, Peter was elected for Saint John City Council (1992-2004).  He was President of the Cities of NB Assoc, President of Industrial Parks & sat on numerous other committees.

Peter was a avid sports fan and could always be seen sporting the latest New England Patriots attire.  He also was a life long Montreal Canadians & Boston Red Sox fan.  He enjoyed curling and golfing.  Peter loved spending his summers at the cottage, relaxing on his back deck, the “19th hole” and reading his newspapers.

Resting at Fundy Funeral Home on Westmorland Road.  Visitations will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 2 -4 pm and 7-9pm.  Funeral Mass will be held on Monday May 17, 2010 at 12 noon from Stella Maris Church on Bayside Dr.  Peter requested memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to P.R.O. Kids or charity of choice.
