Nellie A. McLeod

NELLIE ANNA MCLEOD (October 4, 1915--August 6, 2016)

One of the oldest residents of Black River has changed time for eternity.  It is with sadness we announce the death of Nellie Anna McLeod at her residence in her 101st year.  

She was born in West Quaco, a daughter of Frederick George and Katherine Campbell (Morrison) McLeod.  She was a devoted sister to George McLeod and Edith Seeley who predeceased her. Nellie was a loyal Aunt to her nieces and nephews; never missing an opportunity to help any of them. Nellie was a graduate of Saint John High School, the Provincial Normal School, as well as Modern Business College.  She studied at UNB.  She taught in the schools of New Brunswick such as Fairfield, Ward's Creek, St. Martins, Black River, Lakewood, and Bayview, establishing a reputation of loyalty, conscientiousness and graciousness. Her work ethic, professionalism and kindness earned her a sterling reputation. She treated all who she had contact with with the utmost respect and compassion.  Nellie was completely devoted to her students and helped them become all they could be. As an old friend, Carol Cunningham said "No one was more loved than Nellie. She had such a spark – understated and unsung, but there when she decided to interject". Upon retirement she travelled, making several trips to Florida, Europe, and all across Canada.  She was a member of the United Church of Canada.  Her home in Black River was her sanctuary.  Nellie was a fantastic baker and spent considerable time doing so for others.  She loved nature and could grow anything she put her mind to.

Nellie is survived by nephews Warren, Malcolm, Glen, Colin Seeley and John and Glen McLeod; nieces Lois Campbell, Joan Seeley, and Anne Judson; grand nieces, grand nephews as well as great- great nieces and great-great nephews.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424).  As per Nellie’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.  Following cremation, an interment will take place at Black River United Cemetery on Saturday, August 20th at 10 a.m., everyone is welcome, followed by a gathering of family and friends at the family home.  Donations in memory of Nellie may be made to The IWK Foundation, Black River United Cemetery or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
