It is with shock and sadness that we, the family of Wayne Michael Steeves, announce his peaceful passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. After living out all nine of his lives, Dad left us with full hearts and cherished memories.
Born on August 23, 1950, in Saint John, Dad was the beloved son of the late Jack and Grace (Howe) Steeves. A proud Mama’s boy, he grew up on Jack Street—a street named after his father—and carried a deep pride for the neighborhood that shaped him. In later years, he returned to his roots by purchasing and living in his grandparents’ former home.
Dad spent much of his career working at the former Rothesay McMillan Mill and later at Irving Paper, from which he retired in 2006.
A devoted father, Grampy, and Papa, Dad had a big, kind, and caring heart. He loved staying connected and always needed to know what was going on, often asking, “Is everyone having a good time?” He cherished his family deeply, and some of the best memories were made at the camp on Washademoak Lake. Built by Wayne and his father, Jack, the camp was his sanctuary—a place for four-wheeling, boating, hunting, and enjoying peaceful moments on the deck, watching life unfold over the water. It was also where lifelong friendships with the Steeles and Ballards were celebrated and nurtured. Dad’s greatest love though was his children and grandchildren.
Wayne is survived by his only son, Ben Steeves of Saint John; his daughters, Jenn Porter (Jeremy) of Riverview, Tara Walton (Mike) of Saint John, and Meghan Steeves (Trevor Fleury) of Grand Bay–Westfield; his treasured grandchildren: Cody, Desiree, Alex, Travis, Carter, Ethan, Max, and Levi; and great-grandchildren: Devin, Jace, Owen, Sadie, and Callen.
He is also survived by his beloved sister, Lynda Warner (David) whom he loved deeply, and nieces Stacey-Lynne Clark (Walker), Natalie Pitman (Eric), and Amy Reicker (Danny), as well as great-nieces Kate, Hannah, Georgia, and Addy. He will be fondly remembered by his many cousins and by his lifelong friends, The Sandy Point Boys—Gary MacPhail, Bobby Davidson, and Brian Dicks—his partners in mischief on Jack Street.
Wayne was predeceased by several aunts and uncles with whom he was very close, his great-nephew Warner Clark, great-niece Heidi Warner, his best friends Bill Ballard and Donnie Dicks.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). In keeping with Wayne’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society – Breast Cancer Research or to Red Head Strays.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Walker Clark. Dad had immense respect for you and held you in high regard. Your presence with us as we said our final goodbyes meant more than words can express.
