Phyllis "Fanny" Hanlon Obituary

It is with appreciation for a long life well lived that the family of Phyllis Irene “Fanny” Hanlon, beloved wife of the late Donald Hanlon, announces her passing on May 21, 2024, at 98 years young. Born in Saint John, NB, on February 1, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Melvin Lawrence originally from Woodstock and Bertha (Lumsden) Lawrence originally from Newcastle.

Fanny was a person who loved and embellished life. She and Donnie were lifelong bowlers through which they made many friends. They were members of the “Bakery League” with whom they bowled one night each week. Fanny was also a member of the Glenview Ladies Bowling League. She met weekly with friends that she simply called Club. She took up golf late in life, sometime in her 50s, and excelled at it. She won many tournaments and was particularly proud of winning the Rockwood Park Club Championship. They were members of Rockwood Golf Course and Hampton Golf Course. Golf was their passion, so much so, they organized a golf bus tour to Myrtle Beach for 20 years, with Fanny proudly wearing her Escort pin. That was the focus of their year, planning the Myrtle Beach Trip and counting down the days until departure. That and “the camp”. They enjoyed many summers at Taylor Lake in their camp starting back in the mid 40s. Now, in this case, it was more so Donnie - but Fanny enjoyed it too and especially enjoyed sleeping out on the Front Porch Swing. Their friends would gather there on occasion and the night would be spent with Mom and her friends playing their guitars well into the night (or so it seemed to us kids). Fanny & Donnie were faithful parishioners of Stella Maris when they lived close by and later, St Joseph’s when they moved to Lakewood in the mid 80’s. Mom & Dad both loved their dog(s) Scamp. Yup, they had more than one Scamp. The last Scamp, right up until Donnie’s passing and Mom moving to the Villa.

Fanny was known for her wit, good sense of humour and great laugh. She enjoyed playing cards, having company, particularly her recent visits with Sister In Law Noel Cusack (Tom) and her Niece Nancy (McClary) Rioux (Pierre) .

She was very proud of her daughter-in-law’s (Heidi Hanlon) curling accomplishments and as of late part time caregiver. She formed a strong bond with her full-time caregiver Alice McCarville over the past 8 months for which Fanny’s family is extremely grateful.

Fanny is survived by her sons: Larry Elliott (Gail), Greg Hanlon (Heidi) and Daryl Hanlon (Wendy); son-in-law: Danny Clements; nine grandchildren: Troy Clements (Marie), Todd Clements (Tanya), Terry Gaudet (Vic), Janice Jordan (Kris), Matthew Hanlon (Kaylee), Brennan Hanlon, Christopher, Cody and Caitlyn Hanlon; 12 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Donald and her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband James Elliott; her daughter Sharon Clements; brother Harold Lawrence (the late Florence); sisters: Marjorie Coholan (the late Bill), Vi Fairweather (the late Albert), Mae Berry (the late Gerard), and Bertie Doyle (the late Colin); great great grandchild, George Northrup the Fourth. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
