Nicholas Jacobus Van Leeuwen

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Nicholas Jacobus Van Leeuwen on March 25, 2021 at the age of 81.  Nick is son to the late Wilhelmina Van Leeuwen(van Wieringen) and Cornelius Van Leeuwen. Along with his parents, brothers and sisters, they immigrated to Canada from Holland when Nick was 13. Nick will surely be missed by his family in both Canada and Holland. 

Donna, wife of 61 years, along with his children, Donn (Laura), Terry (Pat), and Kim (Greg), would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all family and friends across the country and in Holland who have offered their support through this extremely difficult time.   

Nick is survived by many brothers and sisters, grandchildren and great grandchildren, brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

Our father was passionate about many things in life.  He loved to tell a good joke. Nick and Donna cut many a rug on the dance floor.  His Dutch roots shone through most when he was in his garden. Donna would proudly display his prized colorful dahlias and majestic gladiolas. 

Volunteering played a huge role in his life and he devoted much of his time to Knights of Columbus, The Welland Seniors Centre and Meals on Wheels. He was known to organize the local bowling league, as well to run the library in his apartment building.   

Nick was an active and athletic man.  Whether it was playing soccer, coaching kids, or bowling, no sport was off limits. 

Our father always tackled life with a positive attitude and never complained, even when things got tough.  Nick had many health challenges in his later years and always approached them head on with determination, courage and certainly without any self pity. 

Dad, it is heartbreaking to say goodbye. For those who know you best, we can now say, ‘Nick, it’s your turn to sit and savour a meal, helping after helping, of anything you want.’  You deserve it. And feel free to take an extra helping for Corky.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date when we can all safely gather together.
