Michael Elward Obituary

Michael Elward passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the age of 59 years. Born in Moncton, NB on May 21, 1965, he was a son of the late Fredrick and Lorraine (nee. Arsenault) Elward.

Michael is survived by his brother Benoit (Cindy) Elward, niece Sara Elward, nephew Dylan Elward, dear friend and second Mother Carol Cosman, close friends Marcel and Dennis, as well as many other close friends.

Besides his parents he is predeceased by his brother Patrick Elward.

Michael was affectionately known as the “cat man of Waterloo Street”. He devoted his life to looking after stray cats – his fur babies - by collection bottles from neighbours and friends. When the cats had no home, he would ensure they were fed and any health issued looked after; he even found good homes for some of them.

Michael’s passion was to make sure he regularly attended Rhoda’s Fea Market on Sunday, looking forward to sitting with Coleen for a chat and a cookie. Michael’s special table was with Brimalea and Helen, where she would always make sure there was a bottle of Coke Zero for him. He was well known at the market and everyone there will deeply miss him; it won’t be the same without Michael there.

He also loved taking short rides on the city buses. On Tuesdays the drivers knew Michael would be hopping on and going to one of his other favourite spots, Value Village. Michael didn’t always purchase something on these trips, but they always knew “Mike the Tuesday Man” would be in. Tuesdays were his discount days, and he looked forward to finding little treasures.

Marcel and Dennis, two of his dearest friends, will greatly miss their visits and chats with Michael. There is not enough words to say how much his “second mom” Carol will miss his daily morning and nightly calls just to say “how are you today?”.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB E2J 2G3; (506) 646-2424. In respecting Michael’s wishes cremation has taken place with a private family burial to take place at Fairhaven Cemetery.
