Mary McCready Obituary

We wish to announce the peaceful passing of Mary Ella (Cossaboom) McCready, which occurred at Bobby’s Hospice on May 4, 2024. Mary was born July 19, 1940, in Saint John, NB, and was the daughter of Clyde Wallace Cossaboom and Vera Jean (Anderson) Cossaboom, and the younger sister to Doreen (MacKenzie) Cossaboom.

Mary graduated from Saint John High School in 1958 and went on to pursue a nursing career in Montreal at the Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing, from where she received her RN diploma in the Spring of 1962. Mary met her future husband, Innis McCready, in Saint John, and the couple married at the former Victoria Street Baptist Church in October 1962. In 1968 they built a home in Fairvale (now Rothesay) where they raised a family and lived happily married for 62 years. Mary loved music; she was an accomplished pianist and had an angelic soprano voice. She shared her musical gifts in the church choir, and together with Innis, found great joy in making music with her family while the children were all at home and younger.  Mary had boundless energy to care for her family and to work as a nurse. She moved from the Saint John General Hospital to the Loch Lomond Villa until her retirement in 2010.  Mary enjoyed travelling with Innis, including trips across Canada, the US east coast, the UK (2004), to Russia, Hungary and Romania on a mission (2013), and a family reunion in Grand Rapids (2017). Mary loved the seasons: the fall colours, the snows of winter, the green of spring with the return of the singing of her favourite Cardinals, and the blue water and brilliant sunsets on the Belleisle Bay. Mary loved the beauty and serenity of the cottage in Erbs Cove, the place affectionately called “Lochinvar”.  She was an athlete and sports enthusiast and kept herself in excellent shape by walking daily her entire adult life.

Mary leaves behind her beloved husband Innis McCready, and her adoring children: Linda (McCready) Madill, Mark (Kara) McCready, Susan (Gary) Reay, Scott (Sharon) McCready, Angela McCready; grandchildren:  Kristen Reay, Katherine (Wesley) Harris, Rebecca (Jeremy) Bokma, Ryan (Myranda) Reay; Megan Ella Louise McCready; nephew: Gordon (Anna) MacKenzie; Nieces: Mary Lynn (Tim) Badger, Margaret Ann (Donald) Ingersol.

Mary's family wishes to thank the incredible team at Bobby's Hospice who went above and beyond to bring Mary comfort in her final days, as well as the many physicians, nurses, and other staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their tireless care and encouragement during her illness.
