With sadness, the family of Mary Louise McCluskey wish to announce her passing on June 21, 2025, at Bobby’s Hospice. Born in Saint John on November 22, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Walter Gerard and Mary Patricia (Malone) Hughes. Since 1963 , she has been the loving wife of John William Terence “Terry” McCluskey.
Mary Lou attended the University of New Brunswick (UNB), graduating with her Bachelor of Science degree in 1959. It was at the UNB Newman Club that she met the love of her life, Terry, whom she married in 1963 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Saint John, NB. In 1965, they moved to Cape Breton and Terry began working with the newly formed Canadian Coast Guard College. Mary Lou joined the academic staff of the College of Cape Breton (CCB) now University of Cape Breton. They loved Cape Breton and truly enjoyed the 50 years they resided in the Sydney environs. Through continuing education, Mary Lou pursued studies in philosophy & theology for several years to deepen her faith.
In 2014 Terry was diagnosed with a Parkinson’s like illness and after some consideration he and Mary Lou decided to move back to Saint John in 2015 to be closer to family.
Mary Lou is survived by her sons; Seumas, Padraig (Alison), and Connell (Fiona Lusby), her daughter, Kathleen Mojeiko (Vladmir), her brother, Walter Hughes (Petra Nortier), sister, Faith Kashetsky (Herzl), sisters-in-law, Marilyn Hughes and Maureen Hughes, grandchildren; Mattvei, Alexei, Abigail, Megan, Fiacra, Ailbhe, and Finn, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Michael and Christopher as well her husband Terence.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506) 646-2424. Following immediate cremation, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial which will take place on August 8, 2025 11:00 am at the Stella Maris Church in Saint John NB, reception to follow. Interment will take place the following day on August 9th at the Assumption Cemetery, Grand Falls, NB.
