Attention Hockey Night in Canada fans! We now take a brief intermission in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to announce the unexpected passing of J. C. “Neil” MacKenney of Saint John on June 7th, 2023. A dedicated and proud supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs that can no longer watch as this playoff season draws to a close. His spirit will live on in his children and grandchildren as they continue to cheer on his team year after year.
Born on March 20th, 1955, Neil was the son of the late Calvin and Theresa (Doucet) MacKenney. He served with the Saint John Fire Department for over 30 years and earned the Firefighters’ Exemplary Service Medal in 1999. In 2010, Neil retired from the department but often gave fire safety advice to those around him. Known by many as being loud, stubborn, and outspoken, Neil felt that speaking honestly was best as “you always remember the truth”. He loved hunting in the great outdoors and playing cards, but most of all, spending time with loved ones in the comforts of his home. Many people loved Neil and will miss him immensely.
Neil is survived by his three loving children: John MacKenney (Becky Cook) of Redmondville, Jason MacKenney (Roz Hunter) of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and Lisa MacKenney of Saint John. His siblings: Kathy Boyd (Gerry), Kevin MacKenney (Carolyn), and Cindy Christie (Andrew). His grandchildren: Michaela Mihaileanu (Alex), Noah Wilson (Andrea Mather), Nicholas MacKenney, Calvin Hunter-MacKenney, Alexa Hunter, and Jersey Hunter. As well as many other loved ones, including his beloved dogs Thor, Oden, and Molly. Neil is predeceased by his brothers Ryan MacKenney (Corey Keirstead) and Wayne MacKenney (Diane).
The family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors that provided care to Neil over the last two years of his life. We cannot thank you enough for the precious time that you gave us with him and the support that you offered.
