George Shiels Obituary

It’s with heavy hearts, that we announce the sudden passing of George Francis Shiels, on January 25, 2024 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on the 10th day of November, 1938. He was a son to late Harold and Ruth Shiels.

George worked as a labourer for years, but before retiring completely from working, he went to work the Oland’s Stables to take care of the horses. He was in his awe, of that job, as everyone who knew George knows how he loved his horses. If George wasn’t in the garage tinkering in his spare time, he’d be down at the lake fishing or in the sunporch taking in the beautiful land that he lived on.

George is survived by his loving girlfriend, partner and best friend Norma; his brother Harold (Ruth) Shiels; his son George Shiels (partner Vickie Whiteway); grandchildren Ryan (Jessica) Saunders, Cody (Meaghan) Whiteway, Amber (Josh) Whiteway, and Brandon Whiteway; great-grandchildren Harrison, Eli, and Skyla Whiteway; step son Charlie (Ellie) Saunders and their daughter Stephanie Saunders (partner Brendan) and their grandchildren Charley, Chloe, and Wheston; as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces. George’s grandson Ryan has stepped in and followed through with the wishes of what was set in stone. Ryan made sure he and Norma were well looked after, and especially in his last days, made sure he was well loved.

He’s predeceased by his stepdaughter Debra Saunders; who was their safety net. She took them under her wing when they were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Dementia for around the clock care in her home, so they never had to be without family or excellent care.

George had family in PEI, whom he reminisced about, and the good times that him and his son had. He loved to go for Sunday drives and going to Rothesay to see the area where he once lived. He enjoyed looking at the scenery and having a snack from Tim’s on the bench with Norma and one of the caretakers, watching the water at the Renforth Wharf. But he also liked to be home with a hot cup of coffee watching his favourite show Heartland.

A special thank you to the Paramedics, doctors, and his nurse at the Saint John Regional. You were so compassionate and caring - for the short time he was there.
