Coach Jason Peters Obituary

It is with heavy hearts the family of Jason Christopher Peters announce of his sudden passing on December 25, 2022, in Kamloops, BC.  He was born in Saint John, NB, on December 25, 1972, to the late Bernard and Bonnie (Brennan) Peters and was the loving partner to Shelly Bradley.

Jason graduated from St. Malachy’s Memorial High School in 1991 and attended Crandall University 2006-2008.  Jason was a very community-oriented person, always wanting to give back as much as he could, and he did this through coaching.  He was a sports enthusiast, especially Basketball.  He coached many teams for East Side Minor Basketball, starting in Bayside Middle before going on to coach at Simonds High.  Beginning in 2009, he was the assistant coach for the New Brunswick Basketball team in the Canada Games and received an award for his level of skill in coaching this team. In 2012, he received the Special Merit Award for Basketball NB as both coach and chef de mission at various NAIG’s.   He was inducted into the New Brunswick Aboriginal Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 and was also a North American Indigenous Hall of Fame member.  In later years, he was coach for Basketball Yukon and moved on in 2022 to the Canada Summer games as Head Coach and then again at the 2022 Arctic Winter Games.

Over the years, Jason had many experiences and worked for provincial government, indigenous organizations, non-indigenous organizations, private sector, local and international boards of directors.

Jason was all about fostering partnerships between First Nation Communities and Canadian Businesses, and his role as two-time CEO helped to build these profitable partnerships as he had experience in both Board and Chief and Council Culture.

Sadly, Jason had to step down from these roles due to medical reasons.  He will always be remembered for how easy going he was, his wonderful sense of humor and his love of giving back through basketball.  Watching people develop within their skill set in the sport drove him on, every day.  Bettering the lives of Indigenous peoples in Canada was his goal in life.  He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Jason is survived by his loving companion, Shelly Bradley and her children Lucian and Ariana all of Whitehorse, Yukon; daughters, Mercedes Peters of Halifax, NS, and Bronwyn Peters (Brock) of Saint John, NB; his brothers, Mark Peters (Jessica) and Glen Peters (Andrea), both of Saint John; as well as his nieces, Odessa (Taylen), Alina and Aubrey and his nephews, Drew (Becky), Carter, and Damien; as well as his great-nephews, Hunter and Archer; his several aunts and uncles, Ronald and Sue Peters of Saint John; Jean Paradis, Shirley and Peter Clarke, Loretta and Bryce Foster, Marilyn and Richard Perkins, Lorraine and Tom Whitman, Darlene and Ken Copeland, Larry and Terry Peters, Woody Peters and Sidney and Darlene Peters all of Nova Scotia; several cousins, co-workers and friends, and long time best friend, Doug Deering.  Along with his parents, Jason was predeceased by grandparents Crum and Eileen Brennan and Joseph and Doris Peters, uncles Lester and Glen and aunts Valerie and Theresa.
