Gerald 'Gerry' Mabey Obituary

After first being diagnosed with cancer over eight years ago Gerald (Gerry) Mabey knew he wanted more time. He fought and prayed and ultimately got his wish. While undergoing various surgeries and treatments he was able to see more family graduations, weddings & births. He got to celebrate 54 years of marriage, continue to travel and maintain his passion for education.

His gift of time finally came to an end at Bobby’s Hospice on November 16, 2018.

Gerry was born February 27, 1939 in Saint John, NB. University and college took him to both Fredericton and Edmonton but ultimately back to Saint John. Partway down that road he met nursing student Margaret Webb and the two were eventually married. They continued on with their journey together as their young family grew.

Gerry was devoted to education. A 36 year teaching career saw him touch the lives of an immeasurable number of students. Many who still addressed him as “Mr. Mabey” and most times he would remember their names. Rounding out his career were numerous offices, teams and committees on which he served.

Even after retirement he continued to influence by being elected to the New Brunswick District Education Council –terms that culminated in a new school being built for students in his riding. His greatest honour was having the Learning Centre in that new facility bear his name.

He also took great pride in being the recipient of both the New Brunswick Merit Award and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.

His urge to travel was contagious and in his second career at Aquila Tours he led multiple tour groups around the Maritimes, to Ireland, Boston, New York, Pennsylvania & Tennessee. His personal travels took him to Europe and on various Cruises. But ultimately, Gerry was happy even if he was just going to Bangor.

He played the piano and sang. Most often about his faith as his church family was a huge part of his life. And that is the way he raised his family.

Gerry is survived by the love of his life, Margaret and their 4 children: Heather (Brian), Beth (Geoff), Kelly (Dave) and Geoffrey (Luba). His joys were his grandchildren: Christine (Adam), Rebecca (Ryan), Rachelle, Peter, Joshua and Lindsay plus Mandy, Kristen & Brittany. Great granddaughter Peyton was the sparkle of his eye.

His brother Bob also survives him as does an extensive family of brothers and sisters in law, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gerry was predeceased by his parents Ted & Marjorie (Moore) Mabey, brother David, sister Valerie and great grandson Jaxon.

The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Bobby’s Hospice who made the last few weeks so much easier. You are a special group of people. Additional thanks to Eileen at Extra Mural for all her wisdom and care.

Gerry’s life will be celebrated with visitation from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018 at Rivercross Church located at 61 Forbes Drive in Saint John.  A service of memories will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am at Rivercross Church.  In lieu of flowers, donations made to Bobby’s Hospice or Rivercross Nursery would be an appropriate way to honour him and appreciated by his family.  Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) has been entrusted with the arrangements.
