After a life well lived, the family of Thelma Barbara Slattery announces her peaceful passing on Friday, May 29, 2026, at Bobby’s Hospice. Born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on October 1, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Absolum and Emma (nee. Oaks) Acker.
Thelma is survived by her daughter Barbara (Donald) Squirrel, sister-in-law Marilyn (Frank) Parsons, brother-in-law Peter Slattery (Susan Marr), special niece Patty Rathburn, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Beside her parents, Thelma was predeceased by her loving husband Robert Slattey who she is now reunited with.
Thelma graduated from nursing school at the age of 18 and began her career in Toronto, Ontario. She loved her profession and dedicated 47 years to caring for others, working at the Toronto Pediatric Hospital and later alongside Dr. Johnston and Dr. Foster. Throughout her career, Thelma took great pride in helping countless children and families.
Thelma was truly one of a kind and left a lasting impression on everyone she met. A social butterfly with a warm and loving presence, she made friends wherever she went and had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome and valued.
An avid ice skater, Thelma enjoyed spending winter days on the ice and never missed the opportunity to watch figure skating on television, as well as curling and golf. During the warmer months, she loved playing a round of golf with friends. Thelma firmly believed that age was just a number and demonstrated that philosophy throughout her life with her adventurous spirit. In her 80s, she went paragliding, and at 90 years old, she joined Marilyn and Frank at Lily Lake for outings on the paddle boats and hydro bikes. She was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all the staff, doctors, and volunteers at Bobby’s Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion.
