Winnifred "Winnie" Gertrude (Gorham) Leggett

September 28, 2021

It is with sadness the family announces the death of Winnifred “Winnie” (Gorham) Leggett on September 28, 2021 at Church of St. John & St. Stephen Home, Saint John, N.B.  She was the widow of James Edward “Eddie” Leggett of Pancake Hill on the Kingston Peninsula.  They were married on November 10, 1951.

Winnie was a woman of strong faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Westfield Congregation.  She was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness on June 5, 1959.  She also had many talents in several of the arts, beginning as a student at the Saint John Vocational School where she played the clarinet in the band and sang in the choir.  Virtually, on her own, she learned to play the piano, guitar(s), autoharp, ukulele, fiddle, mandolin, mouth organ, etc.  She wrote original music and produced two full tapes of her songs in Nashville with the help of Peter Leggett, a producer and agent to several musicians.

Winnie and members of her family formed The Gorham Family Singers and entertained at nursing homes, folk festivals and private events.  She was happiest when playing or singing.

She was also an accomplished seamstress and artist.  She decorated her homes and prepared wonderful meals for family and friends.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Jenny Eva (Troy) Page; parents, Arthur and Jenny (Allen) Gorham; brother, Arthur Bostwick (Caroline) Gorham Jr.; sister, Audrey Marie (Bud) McQueen; nieces, Kim Elizabeth MacKenzie and Dr. Tracey Eva (David Reid) McKenzie; nephew, Carl Felhaber; as well as great niece, Jocelyn Felhaber.

She is survived by daughters, Heather (Bob) Hicks of Dieppe and Dale (Dave) Moar of Shediac and Carter’s Point; grandchildren, Darryl Hicks, Stacy Kirwin and Linsey Schofield; five great-grandchildren, Brody, Payton, Tristan, Scarlett and Jonah,  sisters, Dorothy Felhaber of Leamington, ON, Roberta (Keith) MacKenzie of Gagetown, NB and Willa (Ross) Mavis of Carter’s Point and Rothesay, NB; brothers, Frank (Faye) and Allen (Janet) Gorham of Carter’s Point, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
