With sadness, the family of Bill Calder share the news of his passing which occurred in Napan, N.B. on Sept. 3, 2025 after a brief illness. Bill leaves behind his children; Perry Calder (Sheri-Lynn Lee), Susan Lawrence (John), Carolin Calder (Mark Farwell), Robert Calder (Shelley), and Dennis Calder (Shannon Dorrans-Calder); sisters Roberta McCrossin (late Jack), Harriet McKay (late Barney) and Joyce Doucette (Richard Buchanan); 10 precious grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, a large extended family including in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by Joan Calder, his wife of 57 years, in 2020, after selflessly caring for her at home for many years, and later visiting her daily in the care home, bringing coffee and treats, ensuring she had food and company.
Dad was born in Welshpool, Campobello, N.B. on August 1, 1939; son of the late Edna (Chute) and the late Robert Calder. He went to Teacher’s College and quickly learned that was not for him, so he found work at Irving Pulp & Paper, where he retrained as an industrial mechanic, studying and working to provide for his family. His 36-year career included being a proud Canadian Paperworkers Union member. After retiring he and Mom enjoyed boating on the Saint John River before moving to the Miramichi in the 2001. There he put down his own roots making great
friends.
He was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends and looked forward to every visit, ensuring his fridge was stocked, ready to feed us our favourites, which often included his favourite, lobster. He was an avid outdoorsman loving to garden, hunt, fish, boat, and go four-wheeling, often with his good friend Leroy Poirier. He was a skilled pool player and spent many afternoons at Dooley’s with his special group of friends.
Dad was always ready to help his family, a friend or neighbour in need, and appreciated their support when he needed it. We would like to thank all who visited and supported him, over the years and most recently during his illness. We extend special thanks to our cousin, his niece, Stacy Budd, always nearby and there for whatever Dad needed, and to Nancy Comeau, his caregiver, who made it possible for him to spend his last weeks exactly where we wanted, in his own home, watching the wildlife in his backyard and enjoying delicious home-cooked food.
