William Douglas Buchanan

On June 17, 2021 William (Bill) Douglas Buchanan, 78 years, died following a long battle with Alzheimer's & Vascular Dementia.  He is predeceased by his son, Andrew Douglas, October 1981.

He leaves his wife, Janet (Cook); his son, Gregory (wife Tammy Frits); Granddaughter, Lauren Mackenzie and Grandson, Eric Christopher Andrew; 1 brother James, who provided many hours of caregiving for Bill; 2 sisters, Jean and Carol; the O'Brien and Kipnis friends, who are chosen family; along with other family and friends in New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Bill was delighted to become a Grandfather.  He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his two adoring Grandchildren, whom he would often take to the playgrounds when they were young.  He was an avid amateur photographer and never missed an opportunity to photograph his two favourite subjects.  Himself, a kid at heart, Bill loved to play and have fun, so having grandchildren was perfect for that.  Whether it was playing ball, going to the park, or reading stories, he dearly loved being a Grampy.  

Bill was born in Saint John, NB and attended Saint John Vocational School.  He obtained his Diploma in Business Administration at Memorial University in May 1994. He retired from the Newfoundland Telephone Company in 1996. He volunteered with the Newtel Pioneers in Nfld. as well as with the Aliant Pioneers in NB for many, many years. Bill was a founding member of the Newtel Credit Union, now Eastern Edge Credit Union, in St. John's, Newfoundland.  He was also a founding member of The Candlelighters Association of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1981; as well as past President of Candlelighters Canada 1997-1999.

Cremation has taken place and Burial will be in St. John's, Newfoundland next to his son at a later date. Donations may be made in his memory to the Candlelighters Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, PO Box 5846, St. John's, NL A1C 5XC.
