It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Walter Richmond Matheson, which occurred on Tuesday, November 25th, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on January 24th. 1947, in Saint John, NB, he is the son of the late Hazel (Law) and Murray Donald Urquhart.
Walter served in the Canadian Forces for 22 years as an Aero Engine Tech and Flight Engineer, he was deployed to Egypt in the 70’s. Walter then went on to work for Canada Post for 20 years retiring in 2007. He was an avid outdoors man, hunting fishing and was a proud volunteer for the C.A.S.A.R.A Civil Air Search & Rescue Association and assisted in searches in PEI and BC. In recent years he enjoyed his Bingo and time with family and friends.
Walter is survived by his son Walter Jr. (Lisa) of Ontario; daughter Christine Carpenter (Leo) of Manitoba; step-children Lisa Hooper (Bill) of Rothesay, Paula Dunn of Saint John, April McCullough of Saint John, Robert McLaughlin (Marlene) of Rothesay; brothers William “Bill” Matheson of Bolton, ON, Murray Urquhart (Shannon Young-Urquhart) of Bedford, NS; his sister Ceclia Kennedy (Willard) of Hampton, NB; sister-in-law Lynn Urquart of Norton, NB and Cindy Urquhart of Hampton, NB, many grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Along with his parents, Walter was predeceased by his wife Bella (Gautreau) Matheson this past August; son Harvey, grandson Ryan, twin brother Harry, and brothers Bryan and John Urquart; as well as sons-in-law Al and Brian.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). As per Walter’s request. There will be no formal visitation or service. Donations in memory of Walter may be made to Cockayne Syndrome Foundation, Ducks Unlimited or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
