With sadness, but with joy for a life well lived, the Huttges family announces the peaceful passing of their beloved mother and grandmother Verna on June 17th 2025.
Verna Marilyn Langille was born on September 12th, 1938 in Saint John to loving parents Lloyd and Mildred Langille.
She grew up in a large family that would eventually number 11 children on Mosher Hill in St Martins. Verna married the love of her life Henry Huttges on October 22nd, 1955 whom she fondly referred to as Sonny. The couple welcomed five rambunctious boys and Verna embraced the adventure that raising boys brings. She took them fishing for trout in the Mosher brook and sledding on Humpty hill, put out indoor campfires set in closets, and didn’t bat an eyelash the night she found Bruce’s horse Pride in her living room.
Verna loved being surrounded by family and was delighted when her grandchildren began arriving. Nannies house was an oasis of love with well stocked cookie jars, homemade buns, tea parties in the garden and a tickle trunk for dress up.
When Verna wasn’t doting on her family she could be found outside in her garden. She had two green thumbs and an eye for botanical design. In addition to the beautiful gardens Verna created at home she was instrumental in developing green spaces throughout the community. Verna was one of the founding members of the St Martins Beautification Society and worked alongside Sonny on the Pejepscot Wharf Project. Many of the plants she sowed are still growing in St Martins Harbour Park being enjoyed by visitors to this day.
Verna is survived by her sons Bruce, Wayne, Kevin and Tyson; daughters in law Brenda, Debbie and Sylvia; her siblings Elsie (Owen), Kathleen (Raymond), Donna (John), Bonita, Sherry (Donald), Pamela, and Brenda (Stanley); her grandchildren Maria, Natasha, Kera, Christina, Jesse, Wesley, Alex, Emma, Kailee and Christopher; great grandchildren Kennedy, Kohen, Wyatt, Brooklyn, Jamie, Jake, Luca, Brody, Aiden, Reese, Hendrix, Carter, Kori, Philip, Finley, Addilyn and Owen; many nieces and nephews and her furry companion Kitty Soft Paws.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Henry, her son Philip, her sister Sydney (Rodney), brothers Gordon (Beverly) and Roger (Margaret), brothers in law James (Dolly) and Mickey (Cherri), daughter in law Nancy, granddaughter Jennifer and great granddaughter Harper.
We take comfort knowing that Verna has been reunited with her precious Sonny in the gardens of His Kingdom in Heaven.
Visiting will be held at the St Martins Baptist Church Thursday June 26th from 9:00-10:30 am at 211 Main Street St Martins. A service to celebrate Verna’s life will be held at 11:00 followed by
internment at the St Martins Cemetery. The Huttges family invites you to join them at CE Center at the Baptist Church at 12:30 for a reception to gather and share memories of Verna.
