Valerie Cyr Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Valerie Mae Cyr announce her passing on March 31, 2024 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born in Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Dolly Vautour.  She has been waiting 13 long years to return to the arms of her beloved husband Peter Cyr who predeceased her in 2011.  Voids have been forever left in the grieving hearts of her daughter Andrea Cyr (Stephen Nordstrom) of Saint John; her son Derrick Cyr (Miriam Gordon) of Spruce Grove, Alberta; her grandchildren:  Kelsey, Kyle, and Kory; her brother Ronnie Vautour of Hampton, NB; her sisters:  Lorraine Vey of Rothesay, and Sandra Noftell of Saint John; as well as by many extended family members and good friends.  Besides her parents and husband, Valerie was predeceased by her brothers:  Ernest Vautour, Leonard Vautour, Bobby Vautour and Richard Vautour and sister Marjorie Loughery.

Valerie's children and grandchildren were her greatest source of pride.  Nothing made her happier than the opportunity to see her grandchildren, to video chat with them and to know that they were well and thriving.

Valerie was a vibrant and loving woman with a kind heart and an infectious laugh.  People were her greatest passion, and she had so many wonderful friends.  She loved to go to "girls camp" where she could play cards and be silly and laugh until her voice was gone.  Those were some of her most cherished memories.  Her many hours of laughter and fun with her lifelong best friend Marilyn Cook were also some of her favourite stories.

Valerie had a huge heart overflowing with compassion.  In her younger years, she could often be found caring for a sick or suffering family member or friend.

Everyone who knew her considered her to be quite a "character".  You could always see her coming with her brightly coloured clothes and her mounds of wild jewelry.  She rarely went anywhere without her nail polish and lipstick.  She took great pleasure from compliments on her appearance and the admiration of her very unique style!

Simple pleasures brought her immense joy.  She loved children and babies, animals (especially dogs), birds (especially humming birds!) nature, music, dancing, shopping, golf (Tiger Woods!), baseball (Toronto Blue Jays!), gardening, and being in the forest.  Spring was her favourite time of year.  She always said she felt like the trees were reaching for her when the leaves started to bud.

While our hearts are shattered, her family is eternally grateful that her suffering is over.  We send our sincere thanks to the wonderful staff of Elm House at the Loch Lomond Villa.  Knowing she was safe and cared for in her final years was a great comfort to us.  We also thank the nurses and doctors of the Saint John Regional Hospital emergency department for making her gentle care such a priority.  There will never be enough words to convey our gratitude to the angel nurses of the Palliative Care unit who took such compassionate care of her and her grieving family in her final hours.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (506-646-2424).  In keeping with Valerie’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service held.
