It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Susan “Sue” Ann Mary Fougère on May 22, 2025, at Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John. Sue was born in Toronto, Ontario, on November 3, 1956, to Claudette (Melanson) and the late Frederick Smith.
Sue devoted most of her life to being a stay-at-home mom, yet she also cherished the years she spent as a Personal Support Worker with Kindred Home Care, bringing steady hands and a warm smile into countless homes. Away from work, she was happiest near the water, knitting a new project, or creating bright digital paintings on her phone. Cooking supper was always an adventure—One might joke that smoke alarms were her kitchen timer—but her desserts never missed the mark. Sue’s cakes, cookies, and candy apples were legendary, the sort of treats that vanished the moment they hit the table. And Sue’s love for animals was boundless. Her cats— Bubba, Muffy, and Gemma—and her dogs—Ruby and Willow—were spoiled with affection, while the memory of her late dog Roxy was always dear to her.
Yard-sale hunting with her sister Sandra was a favourite weekend sport, and no driveway bargain escaped their keen eyes. Family and friends were the centre of Sue’s world, yet her circle was never closed; meet her once and she’d keep a place for you forever—she always had room for one more friend.
Sue leaves behind her mother, Claudette Smith (John); her children, Todd (Charity) Fougère and Tina (Francis) Fougère-Saulnier; and her chosen step-daughter, Rosalind Sellar. She was a proud grandmother to Wyatt, Caitlin (Jason), Kendra (Ahoo), and Jaynah, and a delighted great-grandmother and “Grammy Soup/Ramen” to Carli and new great-grandson Kai. She is also survived by her siblings, Deborah Lee (Donald) LeBlanc, Sandra Dorey (the late Mark), and Kenny (Kim) Smith; brother-in-law Peter Leblanc many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; her dear friend Peppy (Ben); and her special friend Benji.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Fougère; her sister-in-law, Lorraine; and her brothers-in-law, Mark and Eloi.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and support staff of 3DS and Bobby’s Hospice for treating Sue like a queen during her brief stay, and to everyone—too many to name—who filled her life with love and joy.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The procession will meet in the Fundy Funeral Home parking lot at 1:55PM. If you plan to attend, please come casual or fun—no fancy clothes. Sue wouldn’t want you all dressed up “like pigeons” on her behalf. Donations in her memory can be made to the Saint John SPCA, Bobby’s Hospice, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
