Starr Toner

With her family by her side, Derinda Starr Toner passed away on March 4, 2026, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB on December 16, 1952, she was the daughter of Alfred Belding and Phyllis Daphene (nee. Cameron) Toner. 

Starr is survived by her two loving children Andrew McFarlane and Angela (Doug) Godfrey; 4 grandchildren: Lauren, Tyler, Owen, and Noah; 3 great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Bentley, and Madelyn; sister Elizabeth (Alyre); step grandchildren: Jessica, Cody, and Michaela Godfrey and families; bestest friend Anita Toner; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Starr was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Phyllis, brothers Noel and Joseph, and biological mother Jean (nee. Straight) Mahar.

Starr worked at the Saint John Hospital for over 20 years, working in the Emergency Department as a Unit Clerk before retiring. She took great pride in her career and felt passionate to the contributions she made.

A lifelong lover of cats, Starr shared her home with many feline companions over the years. Starr enjoyed both watching and participating in the Ladies Powder Puff stock car races at Hammond River Raceway for several years. During her years behind the wheel, she earned numerous trophies. She also enjoyed playing bingo, enjoying games at home and attending the weekly bingo nights at the Loch Lomond Villa.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the all the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital from 5A South and 3B North, as well as Dr. Mackin and Dr. Onasanya. The care and compassion shown to Starr was, and always will be, greatly appreciated.

Visitation for Starr will be on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, from 1:00PM – 2:00PM with a Celebration of Life following in the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel for 2:00PM.
