With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Douglas Whittaker aged 87 on July 13, 2026, at Tucker Hall, Rockwood Court. Bob was born on November 13, 1938, into a family of 8 children. He was the third oldest and was considered an Irish twin with his brother Raymond who was born in January of that same year. Bob attended St. Malachy’s High School where he completed grade 11. He then went straight to work at Bathurst Containers (Maritime Paper Products) where he worked for several years. Bob managed several service stations in the Saint John area including the Irving gas bar at the drydock, the Irving on Thorne Avenue and the Irving on Loch Lomond Road. He was also the co-owner of Ron’s Convenience Store in Hampton until his retirement. Bob loved children especially his grandchildren. When they were little, he would always be found down on the floor engaging and playing with them. Bob’s second home was “The Camp” which he built in 1971 in Keirsteadville, NB on the Belleisle Bay. He spent many summer weekends there and took great pride in keeping it well maintained.
Bob is survived by his wife Marilyn Whittaker (Dalton), his son Paul (Kim) Whittaker and his daughter Shelley (Brian) Morgan, his brothers Ronald Whittaker, Murray (Chris) Whitaker, Donald (Autumn) Whitaker, sisters Mary Ann (Robert) Collette, Lynda (Greg) Gilbert and Brenda (Patrick) Mulcahy, sisters-in-law Margaret Whitaker and Heather (Wayne) Bauer, brother-in-law James Dalton (Adele Mayers) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Margaret Whitaker (O’Leary) and Alfred Whitaker, his brother Raymond Whittaker, and sister-in-law Shirley Whittaker. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Kealy Whittaker (Jordan Watson), Dalton Whittaker (Ashlyn Coyle), Taylor MacDonald, Emily (Sam) Freeze, Benjamin Morgan. He is also survived by two great grandsons, Moses MacDonald and Jack Watson.
We would like to thank the staff at Tucker Hall, Rockwood Court for the outstanding personal care our dad received. The love and support they gave him made the journey with dementia bearable. His dry sense of humor always kept them smiling. You never knew what he was going to say with a little playful grin on his face.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (506) 646-2424. There will be no visitation as per his wishes. Bob will be remembered at Mass celebrated at Holy Redeemer Parish (316 Somerset St.) on Saturday, August 1st at 4 p.m. A family graveside service and burial will take place at a later date.
For those that wish, memorial donations to the Phelan McDermid Syndrome Foundation, Shriners Children’s Hospital or the IWK would be appreciated by the family.
