It is with heavy hearts that the family of Richard Raymond “Fleecy” McGinley announce his passing at Bobby’s Hospice on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Born on October 29, 1946, in Minto, New Brunswick, Richard was the son of the late Jack and Mona (Stilwell) McGinley.
Richard dedicated 35 years of service to Irving Paper as a Millwright. A proud and lifelong union activist, he was a member of Local 601N (formerly CEP, now Unifor) and served 15 years as Vice President on the executive of his local. He was also a member of Millwright Union Local 2262. Richard was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a proud recipient of the Meritorious Service Award. He belonged to Jervis Bay Legion Branch 53 in Saint John.
Fleecy was a devoted husband to his first wife, Trudy, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage before her passing, which left a lasting void in his heart. He was a proud and loving father to his son Glenn (Mary-Beth) McGinley and daughter Shannon (Andrew) Ervine, and a cherished grandfather to Josh (Denise), Zach (Alicia), Sophie, and Luke. They were all proud to call him Dad and Papa. Richard is also survived by his brothers John (Donna), Bert (Willa) and his sister Susan (Derrick) Forsyth.
Richard greatly enjoyed time spent with family and friends. He loved hunting, fishing on local lakes, a good game of cards, and sharing stories along the Salmon River at the McGinley-Friel place just outside Chipman, NB.
Later in life, Richard met Caroline, whom he eventually married. Caroline lovingly cared for Richard as he courageously battled cancer. Words cannot express the family’s gratitude for the love, compassion, and strength she showed while standing by his side. Their love was truly special, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his first wife, Trudy, and his brother, Greg (Ann)
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Luan Le, who was more than just a physician—he was a true friend—and to all those who helped care for Richard over the past year. A special thank you is extended to Bobby’s Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Richard and the McGinley family during his final days.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). In keeping with Richard’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Those wishing to honor Richard’s memory may do so by making a donation to Bobby’s Hospice.
