Ray Challoner Obituary

It is with great sadness the family of Ray James Challoner announces his passing, which occurred on Sunday, April 9, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB, on June 4, 1952, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mabel (Elliott) Challoner.

Ray was the most amazing and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother and best friend. He will be missed by his loving wife, of 33 years, Joan Challoner; daughter Tracy Melvin (Rob Henderson) and Tanya Challoner (Donald Bastiaens); grandchildren Shyanne Challoner and Brandon Elward (Emily Corbett); great-grandchildren Lincoln and Hunter Elward; sisters Shirley Hope, Suzan Mesheau, Linda Challoner, and Lillian Challoner; best friends Barry Yeo and Marilyn Strongman; sidekick/pride & joy, his cat Dolly Challoner; very special friends in PEI Donnie & Nancy Elliott and special nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Ray was predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, Barb and Russ Negus, and niece Amanda Challoner.

Ray enjoyed his time with family & friends, mostly enjoyed snuggling with his pride & joy Dolly. No matter what if Ray was cleaning, sitting, or sleeping, Dolly would be right by his side as always.

Ray enjoyed watching all his favourite shows and never missed watching his favourite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ray worked hard at the age of 16 until the day he retired. He worked at several places including CentraCare, the General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital as a nurse/orderly, and then moved on to the Saint John Shipyard as an insulator/supervisor.

Ray would do anything for anyone and would give the shirt off his back for them. He loved his wife of 33 years, Joan and she was his world and the twinkle of his eye. Ray’s daughters Tracy and Tanya meant the world to him. His grandchildren Shyanne and Brandon meant more than anything in the world. They were his pride and joy.

Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB, (646-2424). In keeping with Ray’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, donations may be made to Bobby’s Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society.
