Randolph Hope Obituary

It is with appreciation of a life well-lived and gratitude for many years of memories, that the family of Randolph George Hope, loving husband of 68 years to Vona (nee Shears), announces his passing which occurred at his residence on Monday, June 27, 2022. Born on June 24, 1928, in Saint John, he was a son of the late George and Edith (McIntyre) Hope.

Randolph was a member of Canada’s merchant navy, which he joined at the age of 14 and proudly served our country during the Second World War.

In 1998, he and other merchant marine members embarked on a hunger strike to ensure that other veterans and their widows were entitled to well deserved benefits.

Randolph played many sports throughout his life and was honored in 2013 by being inducted into the Saint John Wanderers Football Hall of Fame.

Throughout his working career, Randolph worked at the Lantic Sugar Refinery, Crosby’s Molasses, Centracare and Irving Paper. He was also a Stationary Engineer working in Steam Plant, eventually retiring from Irving Paper.

An avid outdoorsman, Randolph also loved cars, music and enjoyed reading about history.  

Along with his wife Vona, Randolph is survived by his children; Zane (Catherine), Nathan (Patricia), Tennyson (Rose), Bobby (Leona), Morgan (Gwen), Vona (Danny) MacMillan and Anita (Kevin) Barrie. He is also survived by his special granddaughter Tera Cain who was the apple of his eye, along with several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Randolph is predeceased by his son Kirkland Hope, daughter Teala Cain, son in-law Mark Cain along with his siblings, Andrew, Bruce, Mary, Hazel, Annie, Ruth and Grace.

In keeping with Randolph’s wishes, a private family visitation and funeral service will be held at the Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB, E2J 2G3 (646-2424). A private family interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens on Monday, July 4th, 2022.
