It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Margaret Eleanor (Morris), (Nickerson) Giggey, known to all as “Peggy”. She passed peacefully with us, her daughters Vickie and Lori by her side on July 31st after a courageous 15 year journey with cancer. Peggy was born on April 7, 1949 in Saint John, NB to the late Arthur “Gadget” Morris, a Captain (SJFD), of New York, and Martina (née McSheffery) Morris of Bath NB. She was the loving wife of Paul M. Giggey, before his passing in 2007.
Peggy is survived by her two daughters Vickie and Lori Nickerson. Her special cousins, Margaret McHarg, Colleen von Weiler, Leah Robichaud, Rippon Cousins and several cousins from the Morris, McSheffery, Crain, Kilfoil, Fitzpatrick, Boyce families.
Predeceased by her parents Arthur and Martina, infant brother Thomas Arthur Morris, brother Paul Arthur Morris, husband Paul Giggey, Aunt Irene Morris, Aunt Mary Rippon, Uncles Edward and Wilfred McSheffery, dear friend Catherine (with a “C”) Hachey, Cousin Norman Rippon and son-in-law John Graydon.
Peggy grew up in the North End of Saint John. Her roots were formed in and around St. Peter’s Church, Ballfield and the Hi Y. She started working at a young age with her Aunt Irene at Horsler’s Drug store. She became a regular at St. Peter’s Ball Park playing and watching the games and learning how to call the game from her father “Gadget”. He taught her the difference between a ball and a strike and everything in between. We must admit she could call them better than the umpires at the MLB Games today. She followed the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Toronto Raptors, Professional Curling Events and the PGA. During the last year of her journey, Mom made every effort to watch games, record the late ones and continually coach and cheer them on whether they won or lost.
She was a graduate of St. Vincent’s High School. After graduation Peggy started working at St. Joseph’s Hospital. From there she moved on and started a career at NB Tel-Bell Aliant, dedicating over 32 years to the company. Peggy was a very dedicated and loyal employee and instilled those values and principles in her daughters.
Peggy found a wonderful partner later in life, in Paul Giggey. They spent quality time enjoying the Maritimes together with their fur baby Heidi, tending to their beautiful gardens and enjoying the simple things in life. She visited Europe with friend Joanne Maxwell, traveled to many of Canada’s Provinces and made wonderful memories with her daughters Vickie and Lori and son in law John, in the Caribbean.
Mom had many interests. Bowling, music and dance were just a few. It didn’t seem to matter what song came on the radio, Mom knew the words (or made them up, without missing a beat) she wanted everyone to enjoy themselves and loved being a part of any entertainment committee! She was a member of the CWL and attended the ladies group at St. Peter’s Church where she kept the ladies “entertained” with her quick wit and wonderful sense of humour. She enjoyed Rummoli with the North End gals and lunch dates with her dancing friends.
Mom’s most rewarding volunteer role was at Bobby’s Hospice. She met a wonderful group of people there who she connected with right away. From assisting patients, to singing to them when they requested, to helping on BBQ days, to making the best grilled cheese sandwiches, Mom was in her element. It filled her heart to be there for others and make a difference in their time of need.
Mom will forever be remembered for her faith, strength, tremendous courage, positive attitude and determination. Her kindness, thoughtfulness, and generous heart touched many and her presence will be deeply missed. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Special thank you to friends: Fran Clements, and Father Ken Weir, who visited regularly and blessed mom throughout her journey and to our dear friend and neighbour, Alma Bezeau who offered friendship, prayers and brought communion to Mom over the past months.
There will be visitation on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025 at 10:00am in the foyer of Holy Redeemer Parish, 316 Somerset Street, followed by mass at 11:00am. A reception will follow in the Church hall with Internment taking place for family and invited friends at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Peggy may be made to Bobby’s Hospice or The St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.
