It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Paul Raymond Mercer who passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday June 14, 2025. Born in Saint John on October 3, 1953, he was the son of the late Heber Henry and Pauline Marie (Hodgin) Mercer. Paul worked as a laborer, bus driver and fuel truck driver for shut downs at the Irving Oil Refinery. He was a member of the Union # 900 Liuna and retired in 2019.
Paul loved his 68’ Red Dodge Dart. He was an antique car fanatic, enjoyed Car Shows, yard sales, and in the last few years enjoyed gardening.
Paul was a voracious reader of books and took a liking to his time on his iPad. A devoted father, husband, brother and friend, those who knew Paul will miss him.
Paul is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Alberta Aileen “Bertie” (Duffley) Mercer of Saint John; son Jason Isaac Mercer (Louise) of Kitchener, ON and daughter Danielle Catherine Mercer of Saint John; brother Frank Mercer (Doris) of Quispamsis; sisters Theresa Tewfik and Linda Davidson both of Hampton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Julie Johnston (Bob) of Sault Ste Marie, ON, Alan Duffley of Shampers Bluff, Carol Ann Duffley of Enfield, NS, Owen Duffley (Kelley) of Halifax, NS, Noel Duffley (Wendy) of Rusagonis, NB and Lynn Ann Duffley of Belleisle; many nieces, nephews and friends, close friends Jimmy Marr, Jim Doyle and Ed Lutes.
Along with his parents, Paul was predeceased by his brother Kevin Mercer; father-in-law and mother-in-law George Gerard “Jim” and Rita Aileen (Buckley) Duffley and brothers-in-law Mark Duffley and Frank Iyoupe.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). Visitation will be held on Tuesday June 24, 2025 from 12 Noon until time of service.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held in the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m.
Interment to be held at a later date. Donations in Paul’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
