It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Norman (Norm) Douglas Garvin on July 5, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB, on December 11, 1962, he was the son of the late James and Edna (Silliphant) Garvin. Norm is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 32 years Janet Claire (McKenney) Garvin; his stepson: Nicholas Brooks; and our grandson Gage Brooks, and his sister Cadence who have brought so much love and joy to our lives. He will also be missed by his sister, Linda McLaughlin (Joe), and brother Larry Garvin (Wendy), who have lost their little brother and friend; Robbie and Shelley, and Kristen and Michelle have lost an awesome uncle; sister-in-law Ruth and her husband Eric, who Norm loved and cared for dearly over the years. His many friends and coworkers meant so much to him over the years. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law Linda Garvin.
Norm was a hands-on guy who naturally gravitated to the trades. Most of his career was spent at Saint John Shipbuilding, AQTS, and he then went on to finish his career at Irving Paper as a millwright in June 2023. He was so proud of this accomplishment.
He was so kind-hearted and giving. He always loved to help out where he could and lived by a list! He was so talented, it seemed, at whatever he attempted to do, and he was the handyman of the family that everyone counted on. Norm did believe you needed to work hard for what you want in life, but also knew when it was time for fun, and he so enjoyed his toys over the years (and so proud of each one). He loved to ride, be it motorcycles, his tractor, and especially his latest, his Mustang.
We loved our summers at the lake, where we raced to every weekend. We put our heart and soul into that property and thrived by the sense of calm felt there by the water, and the fun being out on the water. We enjoyed every sunset as a nightly ritual. Many friends and lots of memories were made.
Our goal of early retirement was to slow the pace down and enjoy each day to the fullest - which has been tragically cut short. Loving you and sharing our lives together has been the greatest gift I’ve known. I will love you forever and pray you will be with me every sunset. Special thanks to Norm’s good friends, Tony, Ryan, and Randy, who helped him as he struggled through this battle. Much love to all who have been there with us through this eight-month cancer journey. Your support and love have meant the world to us! Hugs!
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd., Saint John, NB (506-646-2424). Norm will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Norm can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
