Madeleine Steele Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Madeleine Mary (Landry) Steele at Bobby’s Hospice on June 6, 2021, with her children by her side.  She was born in Bertrand, NB on September 11, 1936, to the late Norbert and Marie Anne (Gionet) Landry and was the devoted wife to her late husband, Arthur Steele, who passed away in 2018.

Madeleine was a homemaker, raising her children, and chose to not go into the work force until they were in middle school.  Once this time came, she started working at the Telegraph Journal and then she moved to work at Our Lady of the Assumption Church as the housekeeper.  She was a very faithful person.  She had a quiet side to her, but was certainly capable of speaking her mind and sharing her opinions when needed.  Madeleine was a wonderful baker and just loved to get her hands into some dough.  She picked berries for hours at a time and liked to make pickles.  She was a wonderful gardener and lovingly tended to her flower gardens with a very skilled hand.  Madeleine loved to read, and she loved to go for monthly dinners with her sister-in-law, Mary-Jane Mills.  She spent her summers on the North Shore at her family’s summer home, which was her family home growing up.  Madeleine was tough and fought through cancer four times in her life, without giving up.  She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her son, Andrew (Sally); daughters, Linda Steele and Dianne Luke; grandchildren, Christopher, Toni Marie, Tracy, Crystal and Jonathan; great grandchildren, Aubrey, Dominik, Draycen and Sophia; sister, Meriza Duguay and brother Lorenzo Landry (Celina); along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son Michael, son-in-law, Joe Peters, sister, Juliana Duguay; brothers, William and Delphis Landry; and brothers-in-law, Cesaire and Judias Duguay.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) where visitation will take place on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from the Our Lady of the Assumption Church (360 Dufferin Row) on Thursday, June 10 at 12pm with interment to follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. For those who wish, donations made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick, the Canadian Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by her family.

We ask that you please call 646-2424 to RSVP for the funeral service as seating in the church is limited.
