M. Carol Dickens Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mary “Carol” Dickens, beloved wife of the late David J. “Dave” Dickens, announces her peaceful passing at St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home on July 25, 2025. Born in Woodstock, NB, on September 6, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Butler) Gillespie.

Carol worked in various office roles as she focused on raising her family. At the age of 36 she went back to school and trained as an RNA, graduating with the second highest marks in New Brunswick that year. She spent much of her career at the old General Hospital and retired from Ridgewood Veterans wing.

Carol was a lifelong avid reader and an active crafter.  After retirement she joined a senior bowling league and spent many an afternoon on the deck of the home she and Dave enjoyed for 58 years, watching him putter in the garden.

Music therapy and Bingo were the highlights of Carol’s days at St. John and St. Stephen. She and her roommate, Phyllis, enjoyed each others company and almost daily word search puzzles.

Spending time with family, especially when everyone gathered together, were some of Carol’s favorite times. She had a quick wit, and a soft spot for the many people she loved.

Carol will be deeply missed by her daughters: Patricia (Peter) MacGregor, Deborah (Tracie) Lima, Catherine (Aldoria) Babineau, and Anne Marie (Robin Thorne) Dickens; grandchildren: Nanci, Denise, Michelle, David, Kayla, Nicholas, Amy, Cody, Wyatt and Clinton; 20 great-grandchildren; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Besides her husband and her parents, Carol was predeceased by her brother James (the late Evelyn) Gillespie.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 2 – 4 PM and 6 – 8 PM. A Funeral Service, also at Fundy Funeral Home, will take place the following day, Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 10AM.

Donations, in memory of Carol, can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
