It is with heavy hearts that the family of Joy Sandra (Gibbon) Irwin announce her peaceful passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on November 13, 2022, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Saint John on September 29, 1938, to the late Gordon and Lottie (Killam) Gibbon and was the loving wife of 66 years to her husband, LeBaron “Sonny” Irwin.
Joy was a very family-oriented woman who chose to spend her time raising her children rather than having a career outside the home. She was a quiet and kind woman, who would come out of her shell when it came to hosting celebratory dinners and special occasions. She always held the family dinners and cooked everything for them. She was a wonderful cook and loved when her family came together. She was a very generous and loving woman, who was always so kind. In her earlier days, her and Sonny liked to go to Pinecone Campground to stay in a trailer there in the summer, and she always fondly remembered the cruise they were able to go on. She liked old time country music and playing card games with her friends but above all, family was everything to her. She was a very kind and caring and beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and she will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of meeting and knowing her.
Along with her husband, Sonny, she is survived by her children, Bradley (Miriam), Sandra (Kirk) Toner and Terrie (Ron) Reicker; grandchildren, Greg (Laragh), Shawn (Kelley), Melissa (Adam), Brad (Candace), Tracey (Kevin) and Natasha (Paul); great grandchildren; Reese, Layla, Parker, Aoife, Jaxon, Brianna, Hailee, Cameron, and Aidan and great great grandson, Matteo; her brothers, Donald (Kay) and Robert; sisters, Martina Sonier and Georgina (Raymond) Vienneau; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Kimberley Ann; brothers, Walter, Gordon, Wayne and Leonard; and her sisters, Deanna, Dorothy, Shirley and Florence.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) where visitation will take place on Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 10am until 12pm. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel at noon. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations in Joy’s memory to Bobby’s Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by her family.
