Joseph "Joe" Cullinan Obituary

Joe served his final watch on the vessel called life on November 6, 2021. Born in Saint John, December 31, 1940, he was the son of Joseph and Esther (Sharp) Cullinan.

Growing up on the “West Side” along with his four younger brothers, Joe went to St. Patrick’s School and then onto St. Malachys high school.

Joe’s love of the sea and adventuring began as a youngster sailing aboard Betty Lou II, the family boat, cruising the St. John River every summer. Joe’s career as a Radio Officer on various ships of the merchant marine had taken him on adventures around the globe, covering all continents. At times, he would take the time to live and experience some of these places in Europe, Asia and Africa. Once even living in South Africa working to construct a new railroad line.

Later in life, he came home to settle in downtown Saint John, where he decided to purchase a few properties and become a landlord. Joe was never one to sit still, he always had to have something to tinker with. His interest included reading (especially technology and electronic techie manuals and how to books), would never say no to a challenging game of scrabble and usually win. I am sure that he will be greatly missed by the amazon delivery person, forever buying the latest and greatest gadgets.

Prior to residing at Saint Andrews House on University Ave, Joe resided downtown at 20 Horsfield St, a heritage home that he was continually restoring. Joe was a compassionate and caring gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour. Our brother Michael who resided with Joe, suffered a massive stroke, leaving him paralyzed on one side. Rather than place Michael in a special care home, Joe committed his life to being Michael’s caregiver for 18 years. Joe would never walk by a person who had their handout for help without giving, he cared about people.

Joe is survived by brothers Hugh (Peggy) of Surrey, BC, Brian (Paula) of Nauwigewauk, NB, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother Michael and Paul.

The family wishes to offer sincere thanks to the Palliative Care team of 3BN, SJRH, for their kindness and care.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). A graveside service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery (Sand Cove Road) on Friday, November 12, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. All are welcomed. Joe has requested, that if you wish to make a donation, please give to those that feed and clothe the needy in our city.

“Shipmate…the watch stands relieved
Relieved by those you have trained, guided and led
Shipmate you stand relieved…
We have the watch…
Boatswain…standby to pipe the side…
Shipmate’s going ashore…”

Fair winds and calm seas my brother
