John "Jack" David Hill

Jack died quietly on Friday, June 11 with his wife of 54 years, Suzanne, and daughters Sarah Hill (Monty Reid) and Miriam Dewar (Jonathan) by his side. He will be remembered for his kindness and his unfailing care for family. Raised in the West Island of Montreal, Jack was one of four children of Fred and Miriam Hill.

Jack was a decent man who lived a full life. Always quick with a joke, he took pleasure in good music, good food and good company. His love of travel took him and Suzanne to exotic destinations which gave him fodder for many amusing stories. A natural-born teacher, Jack taught at several schools in Saint John, notably Lorne School and Island View. His past students, colleagues and friends will remember his thoughtfulness and his willingness to help. Jack enjoyed woodworking and spent countless hours building things for family and friends, including hundreds of stretchers for Suzanne’s paintings. He had a beautiful voice and passed his love of singing and the guitar to his children and grandchildren. He was most in his element while around the water; as a youth he was a lifeguard and diver, and over the years continued to swim, snorkel and kayak. Jack had a soft spot for young children and was fiercely protective of his own daughters and granddaughters (Sophie, Livia and Frances). He lives on in their hearts. Jack is survived by brother Dan (Diane) and sister Elisa (Guy) and is predeceased by his brother Fred.

Jack made a difference in this world and will never be forgotten. Donations in his memory can be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation in recognition of the wonderful care that he received in his final illness.

Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, Saint John (646-2424). In keeping with Jack’s wishes there will be no visitation or service.
