John Kenneth Charles McPhee passed away at the Trillium Hospice in Parksville, BC, early on Christmas morning, December 25th, 2024.
John was the 14th child (of 17) of the late Wilfred Laurier and Sarah Anne (Bernard) McPhee of (East) Saint John. He was born on October 25, 1940.
From an early age, John was fascinated with birds, insects and local wildlife. He spent countless hours alone in the woods or sitting outside, when home, watching the hummingbirds that came to feed. His spirituality was strongly connected to nature.
After highschool, John was employed at the Saint John Shipyard where he worked eventually in Quality Control. He remained interested in ship building and in his sixties moved to coastal BC, where he rented a houseboat and met his second wife.
John is survived by his wife Jane, his brother Larry (Pat), three children Christopher, Sean (Dawn) & Cindy (Doug), two grandchildren Alexa and Madelyn of Coquitlam, BC, many cousins, nieces and nephews in the Saint John area, step-daughter Kate (Adam) and his Portuguese Water Dog Sofia.
Thanks to Dr. Susan Hunter and Dr. Marcus Langhans of Courtenay, BC, the BC Cancer Agency and all of the staff at the Oceanside Trillium Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 201 Bayside Drive, on Tuesday, July 22nd at 11 a.m. followed by an interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Donations in John’s memory may be made to Hope for Wildlife or to the Romero House.
