John Finlay Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Douglas Finlay, who died peacefully at his residence, surrounded by the love of his family, on Monday, May 4th, 2026. Born on February 17, 1935, John was a cherished son of the late William “Bill” and Elizabeth “Bessie” (Winchester) Finlay.

Doug lived a life defined by loyalty, quiet strength, and unwavering integrity. He was known for his kindness and generosity, always putting others before himself. Above all, Doug was a devoted family man — a loving father, proud grandfather, and adoring great-grandfather whose presence brought comfort and stability to those who knew him.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Cathy Finlay, Peter Finlay, and John (Polly) Finlay. He also leaves behind his sisters, Betty Sahagian and Anna Petter. Doug was a proud grandfather to Ashlee (Ramsay) Ness (David), Matthew Ramsay, Lindsay (Ramsay) Ferris (Ryan), Alex Finlay, Kendra Finlay, and Brennen Finlay, and a treasured great-grandfather to Violet Ferris and Sullivan Ness. He will also be fondly remembered by his extended family, including in-laws, as well as many nieces, nephews, and close friends who were touched by his steady presence and kind heart.

In addition to his parents, Doug was predeceased by his wife Evelyn, brother, William “Bill” Finlay, and his sister, Louise Connell.

Doug’s passing brings a quiet sense of peace, as he is now reunited with the love of his life, Evelyn, with whom he shared 68 years of deep and enduring love. Not a day passed in the last four years that he did not think of her — she remained forever in his heart.

A man of strong faith, Doug found comfort in his devotion, attending Mass regularly throughout his life. In later years, when he was unable to attend in person, he remained committed, often watching Mass from home — sometimes twice a day — a reflection of the deep spiritual foundation that guided his life.

Doug dedicated 32 years of his career to Canada Packers, where he worked as a respected shipping foreman. His strong work ethic and leadership earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
