Joanne Deichmann Obituary

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Joanne Elizabeth (Buckle) Deichmann which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, July 17th, 2020.  Born in Saint John, N.B. on February 11th, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Frances (Giggey) Buckle. As a young child she played the piano and sat for a portrait by Jack Humphrey which is owned by the National Gallery of Canada.

Joanne graduated as valedictorian from the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing. Her speech included “inch by inch and a mile is gained”, and so she lived her life.  She and her late husband Hank married in 1959 and she began working as a nurse at a hospital in Newfoundland, then a rehab center and nursing home in New Brunswick. She was the popular singing and dancing nurse.  Joanne was very creative in art and jewelry making.  She followed her passion for reading and opened and owned a bookstore.  She and Hank lived in three National Parks and travelled the world. They kept up square dancing into their retirement when she learned to play the cello.

Joanne is survived by her son Mark Deichmann of Kingston Peninsula, daughters Jocelyn Deichmann (Gouri Bhuyan) of Delta, BC; Kirsten Deichmann (the late Bob Oechsler) of Annapolis, Maryland; sister Shawn Stubbert (John) of Fredericton, NB; sister-in-law Cynthia Buckle (the late David) of Rothesay, NB; grandchildren Johan, Reuben, Thor, Skylar, Luna-Marlene and Carl-Victor; great grandchildren Eimod and Alvida; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.  Besides her parents and son-in-law, Joanne was predeceased by her husband Hank and brother David.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424).  As per Joanne’s wishes, there will be no visitation.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions a funeral will be held at a later date.  Donations in memory of Joanne may be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, SPCA-Animal Rescue, Trinity Anglican Church-Kingston Peninsula or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
