Joan Ann MacKenzie

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Joan Ann MacKenzie on October 20, 2021, at her home.  She was born in Saint John, NB, on February 24, 1949, and was a well known member of the West Side Community of Saint John. 

Joan was a very outgoing, strong, and friendly person.  She loved dancing and going to dances whenever they were held.  She was part of the Saint John Special Olympics team for many years and travelled to different places in the country to represent Saint John in the competition.  She was a member of the Fundy Bowlers and was fairly skilled at it.  For 20 years, she was a client of Key Industries and then for the last 20 years she was a client for the United Catena Training Centre.  The workshop she was part of there was her favorite part of every day.  She loved to play Wii Bowling, and she enjoyed doing word puzzle books and adding random numbers on the calculator to see what they would equal.  Joan was a member of the Church of the Good Shephard Anglican Church and regularly attended services until COVID protocols prevented her from doing so.  Holidays were very important to Joan, and she looked forward, every year, to going to Christmas Dinner at Don and Maureen’s.  It didn’t feel like Christmas to her until she arrived at Don’s for dinner.  Joan was active and loved to go for walks with her friends and workshop buddies, and even after severely breaking her ankle and needing a walker, she didn’t let it stop her.  She was resilient and funny and a joy to be around.  She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. 

She is survived by her caregivers, Cheryl and David Campbell; her best friends, Debbie Maillet and Debbie and Patsy Grant; her many friends at the Catena Centre and the West Side Community that knew her so well. 

Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424).  In keeping with Joan’s wishes, no visitation or funeral will be held.  A graveside service will take place in Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 11am.  For those who wish, memorial donations in Joan’s memory to the SPCA- Animal Rescue League would be appreciated by her friends.
