Joan Freeman Obituary

The family of Joan Anne Freeman of Saint John, NB wish to sadly announce her passing on April 29th, 2022 at Portland Court, Shannex Tucker Park in Saint John.

Joan was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick on August 5, 1936, daughter of the late Raymond and Anne (Aubie) Murphy also of Bathurst. While they lived in different places, Carlos and Joan moved to Saint John in 1968 and lived in Millidgeville for the past 48 years. She is survived by her much beloved husband Carlos D. Freeman, her daughter Cynthia Freeman King (Kevin) and her three grandchildren Katelyn (Jeffrey Walsh), Katrina (Tim Burns), and Sawyer and most recently her great-granddaughter Payton. She is also survived by her brothers Kenneth, Roderick (Lilian), and Byron (Kathy) as well as her sister Marilyn (Jim), her sister-in-law Joan Murphy, her close cousin Phyllis (Real) Bourque and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Harold, sister-in-law Mary and her life-long friend Lillian Lavigne.

She was a doting grandmother who never said no and thought chocolate was a food group. While her grandchildren were growing up their friends also referred to her as ‘Nanny” when she showed up to slip some cash for treats into grateful hands. Due to the pandemic, she did not get to spend as much time with her great-granddaughter, Payton but managed to Facetime with her regularly and there was always a smile and a “So cute” comment.

In her early days Joan was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi and former president of the Lionettes and active in several volunteer services. She was active in many sports; basketball, curling, golf and was a former swimming instructor. She also enjoyed playing bridge and many other card games. She and Carlos loved their time travelling, having spent many winters in Florida and meeting many new friends.

Thank you to the staff of Tucker Hall for their kind and compassionate care of Joan and the kindness they extended to Carlos. We are truly appreciative of their support in the past two years.

In keeping with Joan’s wishes, she is in the care of Fundy Funeral Home and will be cremated. There will be no visiting or services. For those who wish to make a donation, in lieu of flowers it can be made to the charity of your choice or the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
