With heavy hearts, the family of James (Jim) Alexander Fennell, husband of Linda (Humphrey) Fennell announces his passing on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
Born April 7, 1945, he was the eldest son of James and Marion (Quinn) Fennell. In addition to his loving wife of 60 years, Linda, Jim is survived by his children Tim, Tammy Lewis (Scott), Trudy Fennell-Lunney (Mike); grandchildren Keelan, Allie, and Sophie Lewis; brother Billy Fennell (Linda); brothers-in-law Robert Humphrey (Patsy), Kevin Humphrey (Joanne), Steven Humphrey (Bev), sister-in-law Betty Humphrey and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his parents-in-law Dorothy and Leigh Humphrey, brothers Terry Fennell, infant Robert Fennell, brother-in-law Dan Humphrey, and his beloved granddaughter Grace Lewis.
A lifelong resident of Saint John, he was a proud East Saint Johner through and through, deeply connected to his community and the people in it. He had a lifelong passion for all sports. Harness racing held a special place in his heart, but he was perhaps best known in the hockey community as a highly respected referee. A memorable moment on the ice was officiating the Nova Scotia Voyagers vs. Russia game at Lord Beaverbrook Rink in 1976—a story he shared with pride.
Jim began his career with the Saint John Fire Department in 1967, serving his community with unwavering dedication and courage for more than three decades before retiring as Captain in 2001. He was especially proud of his involvement with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), serving as Vice President of the 15th District from 1984 to 2012. Through his years with the IAFF, Jim formed lasting friendships and enjoyed many travels with his beloved wife, Linda.
Family meant everything to Jim. Following his retirement, he found his greatest joy in cheering on his cherished granddaughters at their basketball, soccer and hockey games. He was a constant presence on the sidelines, always their biggest fan. His pride in them was unmistakable, and they were truly the lights of his life.
Jim also enjoyed the simple pleasures: watching the horse races, reading the daily newspaper, and gathering with “the boys” for their regular Saturday meet ups, moments that brought him happiness and connection. His legacy of dedication, loyalty, friendship and unwavering love for his family will live on in all who knew him.
Special thanks to Dr. Josh Tracey, Dr. Paul Keyes, Dr. Steve Connolly, the Saint John Fire Department, and the IAFF (B Team).
