James ‘Jim’ Nelson Carnell passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 24th, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on May 26, 1945, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Jim was the cherished son of the late Marjorie May (McKiel) Cleveland.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 52 years, Carol (Clarke), and by his son, James Heath Carnell. He will also be fondly remembered by his brother, William Cleveland (Katherine Wallace), and his sister, Diane Elliot, along with several nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
In addition to his mother, Jim was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Donald Cleveland.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim found great joy in hunting and fishing, and in the simple peace that came with time spent outdoors. Some of his most treasured moments were shared with Carol at their camp on South Oromocto Lake, where countless memories were made over the years. Jim had a rare way of making everyone feel like family—people and dogs alike—and his gentle nature, kind heart, and playful sense of humour will be deeply missed. He loved to tease, always with warmth and good intentions, leaving smiles wherever he went.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 31st, from 1:00–3:00 PM, with the service immediately following in the Fundy Chapel.
Memorial donations in Jim’s memory may be made towards Diabetes Canada.
