Ina Georgina Mortimer died and went home to Jesus in the wee hours of Thursday morning, July 09,2026 at the Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) in the presence of her loving children and caring staff. Born February 24,1935 in Sydney, Cape Breton, N.S. Ina was the eldest of five children of Benjamin Sinclair and Gladys Theresa (nee MacDonald) MacEachern.
Ina is survived by a son Paul Mortimer (Saint John,N.B.) and a daughter Nancy Mortimer (Haileybury, ON), 4 grandchildren and their spouses; Alexander ( Emma) Hutten-Czapski ( Taipei, Taiwan), Christopher ( Kate Land) Hutten-Czapski, ( Waterloo, ON ) Heather ( David) St,Onge ( Calgary, AB ) and Benjamin ( Valentina) Hutten-Czapskl ( Kitchener, ON), 9 great-grandchildren; Damon Cho, Hanna, James, and Daniel Hutten-Czapski ( Taipei, Taiwan ), Lizzie Hutten-Czapski ( Waterloo, ON), Thomas, Robert, and Sarah St. Onge ( Calgary, AB) and “Max”imillian Hutten-Czapski ( Kitchener, ON) Sister-in-law Mabel MacEachern (Sydney N.S.), and Brother-in -law Stewart “Dinny” Mortimer ( Toronto, ON) Many nieces , nephews and cousins.She loved, adored, and prayed daily for them all.
She is also survived by innumerable friends, who miss her so much, especially Libby, her neighbour and friend these last 61 years. Ina is predeceased by the love of her life, best friend and husband of 66 yrs, Jim “Mort” Mortimer (1928-2020), their son Stephen James ( stillborn 1959), her parents Benjamin (1979)and Gladys (2005) MacEachern and siblings; Gloria Jean O’Dea( 2024), Benjamin Cyril MacEachern (1999), Carolyn Lee (2020)and husband Louis (2023)Marchand, and Ronald Duncan MacEachern (2006).
Ina was a strong woman of faith and her love of people and life reflected that daily. She enjoyed volunteering in her church including choir, UCW and pastoral care and she rarely missed a service. She and Mort volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels and at the SJRH Palliative Care Unit. She helped educate many future family doctors in her role as a volunteer patient for the Dalhousie Medicsl School in Saint John NB.
Ina enjoyed travelling, spending time with family and friends, especially her grand and great-grandchildren. She was an avid gardener, and birdwatcher. She also loved reading, going for walks, especially in nature, swimming, sewing, cooking, and baking.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Heaven’s gain is our loss.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd. Saint John NB (506-646-2424) where visitation will be held Tuesday July 21,2026 from 2-4 and 6-8pm.
Funeral service will be held at Portland United Church, 50 Newport Cres, Saint John NB Wednesdday July 22,2026 11am followed by a reception in the gym,
Date and time for the Graveside Service and burial at Forest Haven Cemetery, Grandlake Road, Sydney Nova Scotia to be announced later.
In keeping with Ina’s wishes , in lieu of flowers donations to SJRH Palliative Care Unit or Portland United Church are preferred.
